The Presidio County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Marfa .
geography
The county is located in western Texas, borders Mexico to the west and southwest and has an area of 9,988 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Jeff Davis County , Brewster County, and the state of Chihuahua in Mexico.
history
Presidio County was formed in 1850 from parts of Bexar County . It was named after Presidio del Norte , a fort and settlement in the 18th century on the south bank of the Rio Grande .

As of the 2000 census , Presidio County had 7,304 people in 2,530 households and 1,864 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 84.36 percent white, 0.27 percent African American, 0.27 percent Native American, 0.08 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 13.47 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.93 percent were descended from two or more races. 84.36 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,530 households, 40.4 percent had children or young people living with them. 56.5 percent were married couples living together, 13.6 percent were single mothers and 26.3 percent were non-families. 24.2 percent were single households and 13.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.85 and the average family size was 3.43 people.
32.7 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.3 percent between 18 and 24, 24.9 percent between 25 and 44, 20.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 94.3 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 92 males. .
The median income for a household in the county is $ 19,860 , and the median income for a family is $ 22,314. Males had a median income of $ 23,218 versus $ 16,208 for females. The per capita income was $ 9,558. 32.5 percent of families and 36.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
