The Stephens County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is Breckenridge .
geography
The county is located approximately 90 km north of the geographic center of Texas and covers an area of 2,387 square kilometers, of which 70 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Young County , Palo Pinto County , Eastland County , Shackelford County, and Throckmorton County .
history
Stephens County was formed in 1858 from parts of Bosque County . It was named after Alexander Hamilton Stephens , the only Vice President of the Confederate States of America .

According to the 2000 census , Stephens County had 9,674 people in 3,661 households and 2,591 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 86.89 percent white, 2.92 percent African American, 0.35 percent Native American, 0.29 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 8.15 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.39 percent were descended from two or more races. 14.66 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 3,661 households, 31.2 percent had children or young people living with them. 57.3 percent were married couples living together, 9.9 percent were single mothers, and 29.2 percent were non-families. 26.4 percent were single households and 13.7 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.96 people.
24.4 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.1 percent between 18 and 24, 25.6 percent between 25 and 44, 23.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 17.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 103.3 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 103 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 29,583 , and the median income for a family is $ 35,293. Males had a median income of $ 26,421 versus $ 21,280 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,475. 12.6 percent of families and 15.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
