The Shackelford County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is Albany .
geography
The county is located approximately 90 km north of the geographic center of Texas and covers an area of 2,371 square kilometers, of which 4 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Throckmorton County , Stephens County , Callahan County , Jones County, and Haskell Counties .
history
Shackelford County was formed in 1874 from parts of Jack County . It was named after Jack Shackelford , a soldier of the Texas Revolution .

According to the 2000 census , Shackelford County had 3,302 people in 1,300 households and 941 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.22 percent white, 0.48 percent African American, 0.42 percent Native American and 4.24 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.64 percent were descended from two or more races. 7.60 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,300 households, 32.8 percent had children or adolescents living with them. 60.9 percent were married couples living together, 8.7 percent were single mothers and 27.6 percent were non-families. 26.2 percent were single households and 14.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 3.02 people.
26.7 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 6.0 percent between 18 and 24, 24.8 percent between 25 and 44, 24.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 18.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 90.1 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 85.5 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 30,479 , and the median income for a family was $ 38,447. Males had a median income of $ 26,953 versus $ 19,766 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,341. 10.9 percent of families and 13.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
