From August 1875, the state sold the settler sites it owned in the town, which soon became a "general store". Since Albany was on the route of the cattle drives to Dodge City , the place soon developed into a supply center for the passing cattle drovers. With the arrival of the Texas Central Railroad , which reached Albany in 1881, the place became a loading center for cattle. In 1883 the town hall and the first school were built. Cattle and sheep farming were the city's main industries until the nearby oil fields were discovered in 1926. Although Albany became a supply center for the surrounding oil fields from 1926 onwards, livestock breeding remained one of the main industries in the area.
