history
The first settlement on the site of today's city was Fort Mann , built in 1847 , a rest and repair station for the US Army on the Santa Fe Trail to supply troops in the Mexican-American War , which was destroyed in an Indian attack in 1848. In 1850 Fort Atkinson was built on the same site , which was replaced by the larger Fort Dodge in 1865 after the American Civil War .
The establishment of the settlement can be assumed for the year 1871, when the rancher Henry J. Sitler built a house east of Fort Dodge, from which he could watch his ranch and cattle. With the construction of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway , more settlers moved to the area and the city of Dodge City was founded, named after Grenville M. Dodge , a Union Army officer during the Civil War, member of the US Congress , businessman, promoter of the transcontinental rail link and a founder of General Mills Corporation . From 1872 Dodge City was known as a cattle town with a loading station for cattle from Texas , next to Abilene , Newton , Ellsworth and Wichita .
Since several famous men and gunslingers such as the brothers James , Morgan , Virgil and Wyatt Earp as well as Doc Holliday , Texas Jack Vermillion and John Joshua Webb had temporarily lived here, the city soon became well known.
The city achieved worldwide fame in the 20th century through many westerns as a novel or film, such as the series Smoking Colts about the fictional US Marshal Dillon.
