Jesse and Frank James (1872)

The James Younger Gang was an association of bandits who committed crimes from 1866 to 1881. The gang consisted of Jesse and Frank James and Jim, John, Bob and Cole Younger . Jesse, Frank, Jim and Cole were in the " Quantrills guerrilla gang" that attacked the town of Lawrence on August 21, 1863 with 448 riders . 142 people were killed in the ensuing Lawrence massacre . Quantrill's gang were Confederate partisans in the Civil War .

Due to the experience of the guerrilla gang, Jesse James and nine other riders committed the first bank robbery after the American Civil War. They entered the city of Liberty on February 14th and were shooting wildly. During this diversion , Jesse and his brother Frank raided the bank. They escaped with a sum of $ 70,000 . They left a lot of havoc, but none of the residents revealed their names, even though the bandits were unmasked. The James Younger gang committed multiple raids on banks and trains.

However, their bustle was stopped by the catching of John and Jim Younger on March 16, 1874. When the First National Bank in Northfield , Minnesota was attacked on September 7, 1876, the brothers Bob, Jim and Cole Younger were captured and another member was shot. They were given a prison sentence of 25 years in which time Bob died of tuberculosis and Jim committed suicide after his release suicide . The James brothers escaped after raiding the Northfield Bank. This ended the gang.

Belle Starr , who had an affair with Cole Younger and whose first child was allegedly his, settled in 1880 in Indian Territory on the Canadian River near what is now Eufaula, Oklahoma, with her husband Sam Starr. The two lived in a remote, inaccessible cabin called “Younger's Bend”. Sam Starr had chosen the name for the dwelling in memory of the James Younger gang. Soon “Younger's Bend” developed into a popular hideaway for fugitive bandits. Jesse James stayed there for seven months.
