action
When the Civil War ends , Jesse James , his brother Frank, and the Younger brothers return to their hometown of Liberty , where they want to continue their quiet life as farmers. But the entrepreneur Thaddius Raines is planning to build a railway line through the city and is cheating the local farmers with all means out of their land. When threats aren't enough, Detective Owner Allan Pinkerton and his aides come up with a solution.
When Ma James and her sons resist and Cole Younger even promotes several of the private sheriffs to the afterlife, the situation escalates. Cole's execution can be prevented by a daring rescue operation, but Jesse is seriously injured. His childhood friend "Zee" Mimms, the daughter of a respected doctor, hides him and treats his wounds. But Rain's reaction is not long in coming, he causes Pinkerton to set fire to the farmhouses, killing Ma James.
To avenge their mother's death, Jesse, Frank, and the Younger brothers carry out acts of sabotage on the railroad and raid the company's banks and warehouses. This makes them heroes for the population. When the group quarrels, they are almost caught and Jim Younger is fatally injured. Jesse James leaves the group and marries Zerelda.
The Younger brothers continue their raids without him, but they don't have the same success. When Jesse is arrested one day, his old gang comes to his aid. Showdown on the Rocky Northern Railroad train. Jesse confronts Raines and Pinkerton, but leaves them alive. Pinkerton advises him to go to Tennessee , since Raines is not planning a route there, and so Jesse and "Zee" decide to move to Tennessee and buy a farm there.
Reviews
- “That the American critics were unanimous here, that one often cannot distinguish between intentional and involuntary comedy, I cannot quite understand. It is much more the case that the film is and wants to be fast-food fare of the very lightest kind and therefore the real annoyance about such unpretentiousness can hardly bear fruit. Take the role of Timothy Dalton: even he is not the usual villain, but can rarely curb a mischievous smile and his secret admiration for Jesse James. Exactly this sympathy, which is in almost every character, makes the film, despite all objective criticisms, ultimately still pleasant evening entertainment. ”- Thomas Schlömer
- “The comparison with ' Young Guns ' is obvious from the first second, but even against this 'American Outlaws' draws the short straw. While the former saw it as an anarchic pleasure to turn the veteran of American myth into a loud pop vehicle, the latter only flirted with it, blindly serving stereotypes with the excuse that Westerns have to work that way. Unfortunately, and this is what is really tragic, this corresponds exactly to the American idea of the film. 'There is no law, only justice', and that's why we get the films we deserve. ”- Matthias Grimm
