Youth and first engagement

Timothy Dalton was born into a family of actors and vaudeville performers in Colwyn Bay, Wales in 1946 and is the oldest of five children. His father was stationed in Dalton's hometown during World War II . Dalton made the decision to pursue an acting career as a teenager, studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art after graduating from Rydal Penrhos School in North Wales and soon toured with his first roles at the National Youth Theater . Dalton did not complete his acting training, but moved to the Birmingham Repertory Theater in 1966 and began to work for British television, especially in productions of the British Broadcasting Corporation .

Theater career

Dalton has been a performer on various theater stages since the 1960s. He was best known for his portrayal in Shakespeare plays such as King Lear and Lost Love Labor . He is also a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Shakespeare Theater , and has also appeared in the Eugene O'Neill adaptation A Touch of the Poet at both the London Comedy Theater and the Young Vic Theater . In the theater adaptation of Philip Pullman's series of novels His Dark Materials , he took on the role of Lord Asriel Belacqua , which was played in the 2006 film adaptation of The Golden Compass by Daniel Craig .

Film career

Dalton played his first film role, King Philip II of France , in 1968 in The Lion in Winter , opposite Katharine Hepburn and Peter O'Toole . In the following years he first drew attention to himself through various film adaptations , such as Sturmhöhe in 1970 or 1983 in Jane Eyre . He also had a supporting role in the 1980 science fiction film Flash Gordon .

Timothy Dalton became internationally known for his role as the fourth actor in the agent James Bond in the films The Living Daylights (1987) and License to Kill (1989), after he was already in conversation for On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969). His interpretation of Bond has been rated by many critics and readers of the James Bond novels by Ian Fleming as the closest to the character of the book. At the time of his engagement, Pierce Brosnan , who was otherwise contractually bound and later became Dalton's successor, and Lewis Collins were already under discussion for the role. Dalton's first appearance brought in more than the two previous James Bond films with Roger Moore and the action films Die Hard and Lethal Weapon, which were released around the same time .

After a hiatus of several years after the collapse of the Eastern Bloc , the production of the Bond films began again. Contrary to various reports of quarrels with the director or Dalton's resignation, the production company announced that it was Dalton's decision to give up his role as Bond. She would have loved to see if he had continued his role.

In the sequel to Scarlett of the classic Gone With the Wind as a mini television series , Timothy Dalton took on the role of Rhett Butler, previously played by Clark Gable , in 1994 . Since then he has appeared in various other television series such as in 1999 in Cleopatra as Julius Caesar . A younger audience might be familiar with Dalton for his portrayal of the murderous supermarket manager Simon Skinner in the British comedy Hot Fuzz, or for the role of the strict cop Jones in The Tourist .
