The Tourist is an American thriller by the German director and Oscar winner Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp . The film had its world premiere on December 6, 2010 in New York and was released in German cinemas on December 16, 2010. Produced with a budget of almost 100 million US dollars, box office box office sales totaled over 278 million US dollars, of which around 12 million (around 4%) were generated in Germany.

The film is a remake of the French thriller Anthony Zimmer by Jérôme Salle from 2005, with Sophie Marceau and Yvan Attal in the lead roles.

action

Elise Ward is an Interpol agent who was assigned to Alexander Pearce as he owes the British government £ 744 million in taxes. Pearce is also hiding from gangster Reginald Shaw for stealing $ 2.3 billion from him. However, since Elise fell in love with Pearce, she did not provide her employer with any useful leads or a photo of the fugitive. Therefore, she is also watched by the secret service, as it is suspected that Pearce would contact her at some point. In fact, a bicycle messenger in a café in Paris hands her a letter from Alexander Pearce.

At Pearce's instructions, Elise gets on a train to Venice and, as instructed, sits next to a man who their pursuers might mistake for Pearce, in order to lure them onto the wrong track. The traveler is the American math teacher Frank Tupelo. Elise later invites him to her suite in a Venetian luxury hotel . The plan works, because the next morning he has Shaw's henchman on his neck. He escapes barefoot over the rooftops of Venice and is finally arrested by the Italian police due to a misunderstanding. When a corrupt official tries to hand him over to Shaw, Elise rescues him in a daring operation in the canals of Venice. During the time they spend together, the two fall in love. However, Elise instructs Frank to fly back to the United States, his home country. Interpol, meanwhile convinced of Tupelo's innocence, continues to pursue Elise, assuming that the real Pearce will meet her in Venice.

To prevent more innocent people from getting into danger, Elise offers her employer to extradite Pearce. Interpol sends her to a ball wired with a monitoring microphone , where she wanted to meet Pearce. Finally she gets a message from Pearce; she is supposed to meet him in an apartment away from the ball. Just before she can go there, Frank shows up again and almost destroys the plan. He dances with her until she tells him he was only used for the plan, so he should go now. Both the Interpol agents and Shaw and his henchmen cling to her heels when she can finally go to the apartment. Once in the apartment, Shaw and his men threaten her and force her to reveal the location of the safe where Pearce is storing the stolen money. Finally she shows them the hiding place behind a relief of the Roman god Janus , but she does not know the code. Suddenly Frank shows up and claims to be Alexander Pearce. He offers the gangsters to open the safe if they let Elise go in return. However, the criminals refuse to accept it and instead ask him to open the safe immediately. Elise, convinced of Frank's identity, confesses her love for him. Before Frank has the opportunity to prove that he knows the code and is therefore Alexander Pearce, Interpol intervenes: snipers shoot the gangsters through the apartment windows.

When the agents arrive at the apartment and begin to look for evidence, they suddenly receive a message that Pearce has been seen nearby and leave the house in a hurry. Elise and Frank are left alone. He then opens the safe, which proves that he is indeed Alexander Pearce.

The man whom the agents arrest in the meantime, however, is a straw man who was commissioned by Pearce to mislead the police. Elise and Pearce escape from the safe with the valuables, but leave a check to pay the tax. Police chief Jones puts the case on record as closed. In the final scene, Elise and Pearce can be seen on a sailing yacht in front of Venice, where Elise jokingly criticizes Pearce's new face.

Janus symbolism

In the film, the symbolism of the Roman god Janus with two faces is taken up several times . At a joint dinner in Venice, Elise is asked by Frank about her bracelet. Elise replies:

“It's the Roman god, Janus. My mother gave it to me when I was little. She wanted to teach me that people have two sides. A good side, a bad side, a past, a future. And that we must embrace both in someone we love. "

“This is the Roman god Janus. My mother gave it to me many years ago. She wanted me to see that people have two sides, a good and a bad, a past, a future. And that in someone we love we have to accept both. "

The safe in Pearce's apartment is hidden behind a Janus relief. Eventually it is revealed that Alexander Pearce has taken on a new look with the help of plastic surgery.

criticism

The Tourist received negative reviews in the United States . According to Rotten Tomatoes , by July 2013 only 20% of the 167 American film reviews rated the film positively. On average, they gave the film 4.3 out of a possible 10 points. The site listed the film as one of the "24 Biggest Movie Turkeys" since 1998.

In Germany, the film met with various criticisms, according to moviepilot , the critics gave the film 4.7 out of 10 points. The film tended to receive a positive response from German film industry magazines, tabloid newspapers and magazines. Wolfgang Höbel described the film as a “good mood cinema of the old masters” for Spiegel Online .

However, he also had to accept negative criticism from the Süddeutsche Zeitung , the Zeit and the Tagesspiegel , while Michael Althen from the FAZ came to an undecided verdict.

In the verdict of the Süddeutsche Zeitung it was said that the director's craftsmanship was “terribly lacking”, while the verdict of the specialist journal Blickpunkt: Film stated that “the German filmmaker once again proves to be a sovereign, absolutely stylish filmmaker”. And while Der Tagesspiegel found the action scenes boring and declared The Tourist to be a “misunderstanding of the genre”, the film magazine Cinema judged the film to be “an old-fashioned romantic crime thriller in a picturesque setting, which is tailored to its two stars and in parts loses speed”. The Financial Times Deutschland concluded that “the German's second directorial work […] is not the great stroke of genius that everyone has been waiting for, but an elegant finger exercise for his next film”.

On the occasion of the film, Der Spiegel published a six-page story about Donnersmarck entitled Unter Genieverdacht , but predicted, “The critics will not cheer like they did with The Lives of Others , the expectations are too great. The main thing now is to bring in $ 200 million worldwide. ”This goal was ultimately achieved and even exceeded.

The director David Cronenberg blamed Hollywood's studio system for the result: “It’s a terrible film, just like your compatriot…” - Spiegel: “You mean Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck and his second film, the Hollywood Production The Tourist ? ”- Cronenberg:“ Yes, exactly! A disaster, a terrible film that was not at all conducive to his career. I hope he was at least paid well for it. "

Awards

In the “Comedy / Musical” category, the film and the two main actors were each nominated for a Golden Globe , but received nothing at the award ceremony. Ricky Gervais , presenter of the Golden Globes, joked in his opening monologue about the nomination and quality of the film: “It was a big year for 3D movies, Toy Story , Despicable Me , Tron … it seems like everything this year was three-dimensional. Except the characters in The Tourist . "(German:" It was a great year for 3D films: Toy Story , I - despicable me , Tron ... It seems that this year everything was three-dimensional. Except for the characters in The Tourist . " )

Despite this harsh criticism, the film won the ASCAP Award in the “Best Box Office Film” category as well as the Teen Choice Awards for the best action actor.
