Charlize Theron
Charlize Theron [ ʃɑrˈliːz ˈθɛrən ] (English) or [ ʃaːˈliz tːron ] ( Afrikaans ) (born August 7, 1975 in Benoni ) is a South African - American actress and film producer of French - German - Dutch descent . She is an Oscar and Golden Globe Award winner.
life and career
Charlize Theron's father, the French-born building contractor Charles Jacobus Theron (1947–1991), and her German-born mother Gerda Jacoba Aletta (née Maritz) moved from what was then South West Africa to a farm near Johannesburg . When Theron was 15 years old and still attending school in Johannesburg, her mother shot the violent, alcoholic father in self-defense in front of her eyes.
At almost 16, Theron entered a modeling contest, which she won. Following an invitation, she went to Milan to model there with moderate success. In addition, she continued her training as a ballet dancer after she had already taken ballet lessons in South Africa. With a ballet group she gave appearances in Europe and the USA, where she was finally accepted at the Joffrey Ballet in New York . She also received engagements as a photo model. However, after a knee injury, she had to give up her career as a dancer.
At the age of 18, Theron moved to Los Angeles. While she was waiting in line on Hollywood Boulevard , she was discovered by an agent. Eight months later she had her first small film role in the horror film Children of Wrath III (1995).
For years Theron was now set to the role of the beautiful woman at the side of the male leading actor, until she played the role of US serial killer Aileen Wuornos in the 2003 film Monster . For this she has been awarded numerous film prizes, including an Oscar in the category Best Actress in 2004 and a Golden Globe in the Category Best Actress - Drama . She was the first South African woman to receive an Oscar in this category; henceforth she was one of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood . In 2006 she received the Golden Camera in Berlin in the Actor - International category . Monster was also the first film she was involved in as a producer.
Theron's first post-Academy Awards film, Head in the Clouds (2004), was a flop; it is considered a failed attempt to tell a soulful love story against a contemporary background. For her role as Britt Ekland in the television film The Life and Death of Peter Sellers , she received another Golden Globe nomination and for her acting performance in Kaltes Land she was again awarded several film awards in 2006, including an Oscar in the category Best Actress , nominated.
In 2011 Theron starred in the comedy Young Adult , which appeared on many of the "Best Movies of the Year" lists. In 2012 she starred as the Evil Queen in the Snow White adaptation Snow White and the Huntsman , and played the same role in the 2016 sequel The Huntsman & The Ice Queen .
In 2015 Theron stood in front of the camera as Furiosa for the Australian production Mad Max: Fury Road , the fourth part of the Mad Max series . In the action film , Tom Hardy plays the lead role of Max Rockatansky , George Miller again directed. The film premiered on May 14, 2015. She previously starred in the Gillian Flynn novel adaptation Dark Places (2015) alongside Chloë Grace Moretz . She was also involved in this film as a producer. In 2019, the film drama Bombshell was released, in which Theron played the journalist Megyn Kelly . Her performance earned her again a nomination for a Golden Globe Award in the category Best Actress - Drama .
Theron was in a relationship with the third-eye-blind singer Stephan Jenkins from 1997 to 2001 . From 2001 to 2009, she and her Irish colleague Stuart Townsend were a couple; they stood together in front of the camera for the films 24 Stunden Angst (2002), Head in the Clouds (2004) and Battle in Seattle (2007). From December 2013 to June 2015, she was in a relationship with fellow actor Sean Penn .
Theron also acquired US citizenship in 2007. Her mother tongue is Afrikaans and her second language is English.
In 1999 Theron was seen on a Playboy cover.
In 2012 Theron adopted a boy and in 2015 a girl.
