action

Joleen Reedy's friend is arrested for a drug offense, after which she and her eleven-year-old daughter Tara have to leave the house he has shared with him. Joleen turns to her younger brother James, who gives her and her daughter shelter. Joleen meets a new man with whom she moves away. James then takes care of Tara alone until he loses his job and has to hand over his niece to a nursing home.

With James 'help, Tara escapes the nursing home, and after a difficult escape from the authorities, they both find refuge with James' father, who, however, demands hard physical labor on his ranch from them as the price for the asylum . When the old man beats Tara because she cannot do the work, James kills him.

background

Reviews

Ronnie Scheib wrote on January 22nd, 2008 in the online edition of the magazine Variety that the noticeably gloomy pictures and well-known actors created emotional intensity. The overly simple script, however, makes the dramaturgical result less than the sum of the parts ("the overly simplistic script by Zac Stanford [...] hits nothing but high notes, making the whole dramatically less than the sum of its parts").
