action
The astronauts Spencer Armacost and Alex stretching lose consciousness during a mission in space by an accident after they have noticed the approach of a mysterious force. The connection with the control center is interrupted for two minutes, the wives of the two spacemen are alerted. The space shuttle can bring Spencer and Alex to Earth, where they both receive medical care. To the surprise of their wives, they both then declare that they want to leave NASA . Streck dies shortly afterwards at the farewell party, whereupon his pregnant wife suggests that someone communicated with him at night and takes her own life at the memorial service.
Spencer quits his job and accepts an offer for a well-paying managerial position at a defense company in New York City . His wife Jillian moves with him to the big city and soon discovers that she is also pregnant. Small signs of Spencer's change worry her. One day, Sherman Reese, a laid-off NASA employee, shows up in New York. He points out small changes in Spencer to Jillian and shares his theory: The bodies of Spencer and Alex were taken over during the accident by extraterrestrial signals that have dominated them ever since. Alex was too weak and died, but an alien agent walks in Spencer's body and receives intimate insights into human defense technology. The twins Jillian is pregnant with are descendants of the alien.
When Reese is supposed to meet Jillian again, Spencer suddenly appears at the agreed meeting point and speaks to Sherman; Jillian can hide at the last moment and flees. A little later, Reese is found dead. Jillian tries to terminate the pregnancy, but the enraged Spencer shows up and prevents the use of the abortion drugs .
Shortly thereafter, Jillian's sister is also killed by Spencer after finding evidence of his murder of Reese. Jillian, at first in a panic, then lures “Spencer” into a trap: She electrifies the water-flooded kitchen after she rescues herself on a kitchen chair. A strange energy creature slips out of the dying Spencer and takes possession of Jillian.
Some time later, Jillian started a new life with her children and her second husband. She looks after her silent, scary-looking twins who are taking a bus to school. Jillian is now married to a fighter pilot and is planning a pilot career for the twins .
