The main character Max Rockatansky was played by Tom Hardy for the first time , after she had always been played by Mel Gibson . The film was shown at the International Film Festival of Cannes 2015 competition and out of competition was in 2016 with six Oscars awarded.

action

In a post-apocalyptic wasteland, the loner Max, after years of wandering around in his upgraded Ford Falcon XB, is pursued by a warboy combat unit and captured after a rollover. The Warboys are an army of the tyrant Immortan Joe, who is cultically revered by his followers , who rules the Citadel , an artificial oasis in a fortress consisting of rock formations.

After medical treatment, Max now serves as an involuntary blood donor for the fanatical warboy Nux. Immortan Joe's entourage also includes Imperator Furiosa, who drives a war rig, an upgraded truck. During a supply trip, she helps the breeders, five women from Joe's harem, to escape. Together they try to reach Furiosa's original home, the so-called Green Land.

When Immortan Joe realizes the betrayal, he sends his troops out. Nux takes Max with him as his mobile blood bag. On the chase, Max escapes and joins the women. With the armies of his two allied clans, Joe pursues the War Rig. After the heavily pregnant Splendid stands protectively in front of Max, she falls from the truck and is run over by Joe's vehicle. Despite great sadness, the group continues. Joe and his entourage recover the half-dead body and perform a caesarean section, although any help for the male unborn child comes too late. Driven by anger, Joe and his grown son want to pursue even more dogged revenge.

When the group reached the green land, they found that it had meanwhile become swampy and the water there had become acidic. Together with the remaining inhabitants of the former Green Land, the women first want to look for a new place to stay on the other side of a salt desert. However, Max is able to convince the group to return to the citadel and free them from Joe. Together they manage to kill their pursuers and put an end to Joe's reign of terror. After the water supply has also been released for the population, Max says goodbye to Furiosa (whose injury he healed with a blood donation) with a silent greeting and disappears into the cheering crowd.

production

development

The idea for a fourth film in the Mad Max series came to George Miller in 1999, but the implementation turned out to be difficult, so that the project spent many years in development hell. Miller announced in 2003 that a script was in place and preproduction was in the early stages. Although the film received the green light at the time with a budget of $ 100 million, work had to be suspended until further notice. The reason for this was the planned filming in Namibia , which, after the USA and several other countries had tightened the entry and shipping regulations to Namibia, could not take place for security reasons. With the outbreak of the Iraq war , the production was completely put on hold, as the subject of the film was judged to be problematic. In addition, Mel Gibson announced his departure after production was discontinued.

George Miller with Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy at the Cannes Film Festival

In November 2006, Miller was quoted as saying that he still intended to make Mad Max: Fury Road without Gibson. The script for the film was developed with the help of British comic book author Brendan McCarthy , who also designed many of the new characters and vehicles. In October 2009, Miller announced that filming for the film would begin in Broken Hill , Australia in the spring of 2011 . That same month, Tom Hardy was in talks for the lead role. Furthermore, it was Charlize Theron announced as occupation. In June 2010, Hardy confirmed on the television show Friday Night with Jonathan Ross that he would be taking on the role.

Filming

Miller intended to film all of the stunts in real life, as computer effects "even if they are really good [...] would always seem a little fake". He “tried that everything was real: the stunts, the cars, the desert”.

In November 2011, the shooting of the Australian Broken Hill was moved to Namibia after heavy downpours had created a lush flower landscape in Broken Hill, which turned out to be unfavorable for the look of the film. The shooting in Namibia lasted from July to December 2012. In February 2013, the producers were accused of having damaged parts of the Namib during the shooting and endangering some animals and plants, but the Namibia Film Commission did not find anything questionable when visiting the locations . In September 2013 it was announced that re- shoots would take place in November.

vehicles

The tanker truck is based on a Tatra 815 , the cabin of which has been moved back and enlarged with the rear of a Chevrolet Fleetmaster . A total of three optically identical copies of the War Rig were made. Two were powered by two V8 engines each, the third by a Tatra Racing Engine, as the first variant turned out to be underpowered. One was destroyed for the film, the other two are still owned by the film company.

Immortan Joe's vehicle is based on two Cadillac DeVilles , which are powered by two V16 engines. When building the vehicle, great attention was paid to pomp. It has isolated wooden elements in a world in which wood is in short supply.

reception

From the criticism is Mad Max: Fury Road almost always praised. The Rotten Tomatoes review collection lists 378 reviews, 366 of which are positive. This puts the film at number 1 on their list of the “Top 100 Action & Adventure Movies” (as of 2018). At Metacritic , the film received a rating of 90/100 based on 51 reviews. In the IMDb he entered the top 250 on May 16, 2015 and is in 205th place.

Markus Keuschnigg praises in Die Presse that the film has become “a wonderfully anachronistic feverish dream in rust red and steel blue, a sweaty, filthy ode to the cinema as a space of experience, a fall back into an era of perhaps visionary, perhaps crazy fantasies.” Pascal Blum writes in Tages-Anzeiger : Mad Max: Fury Road “is an action film, and as such it is amazing. It was called a 'Western on Wheels', and one could dare to say: This is John Ford's ' stagecoach ' for our era. ” Tobias Kniebe comes to the conclusion in the Süddeutsche Zeitung : Mad Max: Fury Road is“ an unrestrained material battle , merciless outbid and overwhelming cinema - but not as cool, not as listlessly calculated as its current competitors. "

The film by Frank Schnelle from epd Film received a negative rating . Although he praises the “spectacular stunts and the celebration of the garish end-time surfaces” and the play by Charlize Theron , he emphasizes the lack of preoccupation with “the psychology of the protagonist or the dramaturgy of his hero's journey”. Miller had "no time for his characters, [...] was too busy with stunts and machines". Simon Rothöhler from the taz is not really enthusiastic either: Although the "unleashing of pretty much every form of kinetic energy [...] in the best moments wins programmatic quality", "the continuous battles of the junk car armies quickly become repetitive".

In 2016, Mad Max: Fury Road took 19th place in a BBC poll of the 100 most important films of the 21st century .
