Golden Globe Award / Best Director

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Winners and nominees for the Golden Globe Award in the category Best Director (Best Director - Motion Picture) , which rewards the most outstanding directing achievements of the past calendar year. The category was launched in 1944.

The best director was later awarded an Oscar 41 times , most recently in 2019 when the award went to Alfonso Cuarón ( Roma ) . In 1952, 1957, 1969, 1970, 1984, 1989 and 2013, the Golden Globes-honored directing achievement was not nominated for an Oscar. The rare honor of being nominated for two different directorial works in one year went to the Americans Francis Ford Coppola (1975 for The Dialogue and The Godfather - Part II ), Steven Soderbergh (2001 for Erin Brockovich and Traffic - Power of the Cartel ) and Clint Eastwood (2007 for Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima ).

American filmmakers have won the directing award 59 times (including directors who emigrated to the USA such as the Hungarian László Benedek , the Czech Miloš Forman and the Austrians Billy Wilder and Fred Zinnemann ), followed by their colleagues from Great Britain (7 wins), Mexico ( 4) and the double success of Ang Lee from Taiwan . A director from German-speaking countries once competed in vain for the award: 2005 Marc Forster for When dreams learn to fly . Likewise, victories by female filmmakers, similar to the Academy Awards, have remained exceptional so far. In 1984, Barbra Streisand was the only female director to triumph for Yentl . Streisand ( Lord of the Tides ) received further nominations in 1991 , Sofia Coppola ( Lost in Translation ) in 2003 and Ava DuVernay ( Selma ) in 2015 .
