action

18-year-old Selina D'Arcey has been blind since an accident in her early childhood. Since then she has lived with her mother, the prostitute Rose-Ann, and her alcoholic grandfather Ole Pa locked up in their apartment. She was never allowed to go to school and therefore does not know Braille. Their only occupation is housework. One day her grandfather takes her for a walk in the park. There she is shocked by the impressions she has never experienced. The young black Gordon Ralfe becomes aware of her. From now on, Selina persuades her grandfather to take her to the park every day. Gordon and Selina meet there regularly and become friends. One of their meetings is observed by the prostitute Sadie, who reports it to Rose-Ann. The mother then beats Selina and tries to explain to her why she cannot meet a black man. Gordon again tries to place Selina in a school for the blind. However, this contradicts Rose-Ann and Sadie's plans. The two women want to open a brothel in which Selina will be the main attraction. Gordon saves the girl from this terrible future and takes her to the school for the blind.

Reviews

"A melodrama staged carefully and without dramatic effects, but overall too clichéd and sentimental melodrama that promotes the integration of disadvantaged minorities, but limits the reconciliation of social contradictions to the area of private feelings."

Awards

Elizabeth Hartman received a Golden Globe Award for Most Promising Newcomer in 1966 . That same year, Shelley Winters received an Oscar for best supporting female role.
