Born Yesterday (Original title: Born Yesterday ) is an American comedy film directed by George Cukor in 1950 after the stage play non yesterday ( Born Yesterday ) of Garson Kanin . The German premiere was on December 4, 1951.
plot
The multimillionaire Harry Brock, who made his fortune as a self-made man with junkyards and some illegal methods, travels to Washington to bribe a few politicians. He is accompanied by his fiancée Emma Dawn and his lawyer Jim Devery. Emma's ignorance and lack of manners are noticeable at an evening meeting with a congressman and his wife. Although Harry's own manners are not too good either, he decides that a teacher should be hired for her. His choice falls on the cultivated journalist Paul Verrall, whom he recently met.
Under Paul's guidance, Emma becomes a confident woman who now begins to question the character of her fiancé and his professional activities. She learns about history, politics, culture and law and turns out to be a smart student. Emma falls in love with Paul, who, unlike Harry, treats her with courtesy and respect.
Devery has long been asking Harry to finally marry Emma after seven years of engagement, as her name as a straw man covers many of Harry's possessions and activities, which he hides from the tax investigators - officially, she is a not inconsiderable part of Harry's fortune overwritten. Ultimately, Emma's newfound independence comes into conflict when she refuses to sign papers for a seedy deal from Harry. Harry, who absolutely loves her, reacts angrily to her rebellion and hits her. Billie then signs the papers, but then leaves the apartment and asks Paul for help. With the papers signed in Billie's name and their new determination, the two can escape Harry's sphere of influence. Emma promises Harry that she will return the property that has been transferred to her in slow installments, as long as he leaves her and Paul in peace. Eventually Paul and Emma get married.
background
For the film rights, Garson Kanin received around one million dollars, the highest sum to date. Columbia boss Harry Cohn paid so much to get top star Rita Hayworth into the movie. But Hayworth was no longer interested in the film after her wedding to Aly Khan . Afterwards, Gloria Grahame , Jean Arthur and Lana Turner, among others , were in discussion for the female lead . Eventually, Judy Holliday was selected, who had played the role of Emma in the Broadway play for four years. Writer Kanin and his wife Ruth Gordon had already campaigned for Holliday to play the character in the film version, but Columbia Pictures was initially unsure about their lack of publicity with the film audience. Kanin and Gordon wrote a major supporting role for Holliday in the 1949 comedy Ehekrieg (also directed by Cukor), through which Holliday became known to the film audience and was also able to convince the Columbia producers of her comedic talent. In addition to Holliday, the supporting actors Frank Otto and Larry Oliver again played the roles they had previously played in the Broadway play.
Oscar winner Jean Louis was responsible for the costumes , while Harry Horner was in charge of the production . The future television director Earl Bellamy acted as assistant director . For the film music, music from Ludwig van Beethoven's 2nd Symphony, Opus 36, was taken , among other things .
Born Yesterday was a success with both critics and audiences. With a budget of 4.1 million dollars for the time, he made twelve million dollars worldwide by 1970. In 1993, a remake starring Melanie Griffith , Don Johnson and John Goodman was directed by Luis Mandoki . The German title is Born Yesterday - You don't kiss blondes .
Reviews
Bosley Crowther praised the film in the New York Times on December 27, 1950 as one of the "best films of the past year". Judy Holliday's performance is “priceless” and the film focuses more on the “social significance” of the play compared to the stage version. Cukor managed to bring both the comedic and the moral aspects of the subject across. In addition to the portrayal of Hollidays, which Crowther extolled, he also praised the actors William Holden, Howard St. John and Broderick Crawford, the latter playing the role of the corrupt businessman - compared to Paul Douglas ' performance in the same role on Broadway, which is still I showed remnants of sympathy for Harry - interpreted much more greedy and angrier.
The lexicon of international films judged: "Cukor, one of the few Hollywood directors who repeatedly exposed the common stereotypes of femininity, has worked with Garson Kanin to create a film that was far ahead of its time."
