S. Sylvan Simon

Samuel Sylvan Simon (born March 9, 1910 in Chicago , Illinois , USA, † May 17, 1951 in Beverly Hills , California ) was an American film director.

Life

S. Sylvan Simon, whose father David Simon worked for Universal Pictures , attended the University of Michigan from 1927 after graduating from high school . In 1931 he graduated from the university. For a year, Simon worked as a language trainer and assistant director at the radio. There he began broadcasting radio courses for learning a musical instrument.

Simon moved to New York to study law at Columbia Law School. In 1935 he finished his studies. He became a director at the Summer Theater in New York, after which he was employed by Warner Bros. as a talent scout. He also directed the plays Lysistrata and Girls in Uniform on Broadway .

A contract with Universal Pictures drew him to the west coast. He directed a short film called Hollywood Screen Test , which cemented his reputation. In the following years Universal employed him as a director and producer. Lana Turner , Frank Morgan , Ann Rutherford , Red Skelton , Wallace Beery and the comedian duo Abbott and Costello played under his direction . His greatest success was in 1951, the Oscar nomination for Best Picture , which he for his work as a producer of non The yesterday ( Born Yesterday received).

At the age of 41, S. Sylvan Simon suffered a heart attack which resulted in his death.
