Joseph Walker (cameraman)

Joseph Walker (born August 22, 1892 in Denver , Colorado , † August 1, 1985 in Las Vegas , Nevada ) was an American cinematographer.

Life

Walker worked in Hollywood from 1910 , initially as an apprentice and camera assistant. During the First World War he worked as a cameraman for documentaries for the Red Cross . In 1919 he got his first job as chief surgeon in the film Back to God's Country . In the following years he worked as a freelancer for various film studios before he was hired by the production company Columbia Pictures in 1927 . The collaboration with Frank Capra , for whom he worked as cameraman for 18 films, proved to be particularly long-lasting and successful .

In addition to his work as a cameraman, Walker was Vice President of the American Society of Cinematographers in 1944 and 1945 and also made an appearance as the inventor of photographic equipment. After the film Affair in Trinidad , he ended his career as a cameraman, which lasted more than 30 years and in which he had participated in over 140 films. During this time, Walker was nominated four times for an Oscar in the category of best camera . In 1981 he was the first to receive the Gordon E. Sawyer Award for technical innovations in film. In 1984, a year before his death, he published his autobiography The Light on Her Face .
