action

Although in financial difficulties, the singer Margaret Howard refuses the marriage proposal of her admirer Phillip Cameron. The Howards family home is up for auction. At the auction there is music lover Steve Corelli who hears Margaret's singing and offers her a job as a singer in one of his nightclubs. Steve wants Margaret to give his club a little opera flair, but his clientele takes the performance negatively.

Steve reworks the idea into a theater dinner called La Marguerita . Margaret's performance from the opera Rigoletto is a complete success. To celebrate the evening, Steve invites Margeret to his place, where he has set up some rooms for her. But Margaret declines the invitation.

The next morning Phil waits for her in front of Margaret's locker room. To spend the day with him, she stays away from rehearsals. Steve fears that he might lose Margaret to Phil again. So he tells her that the Metropolitan Opera wants to hire her so that she can't go to Boston with Phil. Steve pays a lot of money so Margaret can work with the best teachers in the Met. He manages to get a board member of the Met, Maurizio, to see one of Margaret's performances. Steve tries to teach Margaret about success, but finds her in Phil's arms. Steve has thoughts of murder against Phil but ultimately surrenders to the alcohol and the game.

Miller, the operator of the casino, demands that Steve pay off his gambling debts of $ 15,000. Steve pays with a bad check and escapes. Steve's assistant Luigi leads Margaret to him. He explains to her that he cannot be there for her debut at the Met, but that he will hear her on the radio. Before the performance, Margaret separates from Phil. When Margaret sings an aria from the opera La Bohème , Steve can't stand it and drives to the Met. There he learns that Margaret has covered his check with a loan from Maurizio. At the end of her performance, Margarete sees Steve among the audience and blows him an air kiss.
