life and career
Allen attended the New York Military Academy and Dartmouth College . He then went into the film business and was under contract with Columbia Pictures and 20th Century Fox in the 1930s . He mostly played the youthful hero in forty films - he received the Box Office Award for his appearance in Love Me Forever . With the Bob Allen Ranger series, Allen had his own western film series, which included six films that were produced at low prices. However, he never made his breakthrough to become a major film star.
From 1939 he turned to the stage and played in Los Angeles and San Francisco alongside Claudia Morgan and Sylvia Sidney . During the Second World War he entertained the troops in North Africa and Italy, only to return to Broadway after its end. In the early 1950s, he was also occasionally seen in television roles. Occasionally he played guest roles well into old age, but built up a second career as a real estate agent in addition to acting.
Allen was married to actress Evelyn Peirce from 1934 until her death and the couple have two children. He made one last public appearance in July 1998 when he presented Chuck Norris with the Sir John Templeton Epiphany Prize .
