action

Doris Attinger tries to shoot her faithless husband Warren, who is cheating on her with Beryl Caighn. The Bonner couple found out about this in the newspaper the next morning. Adam Bonner is a prosecutor and his wife Amanda is a criminal defense attorney. Immediately a marital argument ensues over this story, as Amanda is convinced that a betrayed wife will not receive the same justice after such an act as a man in a comparable situation. Adam learns on the same day that he has been designated as a prosecutor to bring this case to court, and he immediately sees marital problems looming. Meanwhile, his wife Amanda is trying to secure the mandate. The marital dispute over the emancipation of women will henceforth be carried out in court. Amanda fights in court not only for the freedom of her client, but for equal rights for women. Their marriage threatens to be ruined. At the height of the legal proceedings, she ridicules the judiciary itself, and with it her husband Adam, who sees the law being dragged in the mud. He leaves Amanda, who now only meets her husband at court appointments. In the end, Amanda wins the case, but appears to have lost her marriage. It is only when they meet with the tax advisor that they both realize that their relationship and what they have built up in life is more important than the political argument, and they find each other again.

background

Marriage war is one of the late screwball comedy classics and, alongside The Woman Who Is Talked about, one of the most popular comedies by the Tracy / Hepburn couple, who also had a love story that spanned decades in real life.

criticism

“The second of the unique series of Cukor films that were made between 1947 and 1953 in collaboration with the team of authors Ruth Gordon / Garson Kanin and that dealt primarily with one topic - mostly in the form of" sophisticated comedy ": women's emancipation and Relationship of the sexes. Here a progressive couple of lawyers leads the battle between the sexes on behalf of the court. An intelligent plea for equality. "

Awards

Actress and writer Ruth Gordon and her co-writer Garson Kanin received an Oscar nomination for their screenplay in 1950 . Ruth Gordon later became world famous through Roman Polański's film Rosemary's Baby , for which she received an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, and through her leading role in the black comedy Harold and Maude .

In 1992, Marital War was added to the National Film Registry .
