No Bros is an Austrian hard rock band from Innsbruck , which enjoyed great success in the early 1980s with titles such as Heavy Metal Party , Be My Friend and Hey You .

Band history

1974–1979: The founding years

In 1974 Klaus Schubert and Michael Ausserhofer founded the band Target in Tyrol , which turned into No Bros at the end of the 1970s with the participation of Nikolaus Opperer, Freddy Gigele and Franz Heumader . In 1979, during a live performance in Pinkafeld, there was a fateful encounter with ORF radio presenter Gotthard Rieger . He became a friend and manager of the band with the aim of establishing local hard rock in Austria. In 1979 the first studio recording was carried out in the ORF regional studio in Tyrol.

1980–1984: The breakthrough

Due to the connection with the influential ORF man Gotthard Rieger , No Bros naturally had far more development opportunities than other Austrian hard rock bands such as B. Blind petition . This drew a lot of dislike for the band. The hostility of Blind Petition-No Bros in particular became legendary.

In 1981 the first single Good Morning Sir / Reggae was released . The breakthrough came in 1982 with the release of the rousing live album Heavy Metal Party . Spurred on by the success, they recorded the studio album Ready For The Action in Cologne in the same year , the quality of which, however, in no way came close to the previous LP. The single Be My Friend became the band's greatest success. The follow-up single Hey you (1983) more or less went under.

After extensive touring with bands like Motörhead and Uriah Heep , there were arguments in the band and Franz Heumader was replaced by Harry Gschösser.

With this line-up, the album Our Own Way was recorded. It is noticeable that singer Freddy Gigele first clearly distinguished himself as a songwriter. The single Friends will keep together (Ausserhofer) - probably intended as a (male) drinking song - was a failure.

1985–1986: The collapse

Shortly after the release of the album Our Own Way , the dispute between Freddy Gigele and Klaus Schubert escalated, which is why the No Bros project broke up for the time being: The fact that manager Gotthard Rieger (ORF) distanced himself was particularly problematic.

Freddy Gigele and Michael Außerhofer launched solo projects, Harry Gschösser went to the United States to the band Racer X join.

The remaining members Klaus Schubert and Nik Opperer continued to lead the band with studio musicians and the album Cavalry of Evil was recorded in 1986 with the Scottish singer Joe Francis Hamilton .

After the reconciliation with Gotthard Rieger, the band could now count on the support of the ORF again. The single So hard to see advertised there was nevertheless a total failure.

After a final concert with the support of former U8 -Frontmanns Lem Enzinger it was quiet around No Bros .

1986–2004: separate ways

In the years after the dissolution, the individual members played with other bands. Franz Heumader, for example, was on the road with the Poor Boys group , while Klaus Schubert, Nik Opperer and Lem Enzinger performed together as Schubert .

There were a number of best-of albums for no-bros fans during this period .

2005–2017: The comeback

In 2005 the former founding members decided to hold a reunion concert. Only Freddy Gigele was not there and was replaced by Lem Enzinger. Further appearances at various open-air concerts and festivals led to the decision to record a new album again. In July 2006, Hungry For The Good Times was published. In the autumn of the same year The Party So Far I (Limited Best Of Fan Edition) was submitted. Remixes, originals and selected numbers from the various side projects of the musicians complete this CD. In 2007 a small tour of Austria was completed in typical heavy metal party fashion. In spring 2008, founding member Nick P. Opperer announced his resignation for professional reasons. Andi Brunner is presented as his successor. Andi Brunner is no stranger to the music scene and is considered an excellent virtuoso on the keyboard. After a few live acts with the new line-up, there will be an artistic break. Mastermind Klaus Schubert (Klaus Schubert's Blues Bunnies) and Franz Heumader (Sugardaddy-Band) concentrate on their side projects in 2009. In April 2010 the CD The Party So Far II (Rare Cuts Fan-Edit) will be released.

2018 until today: splitting up

In mid-2018, Freddy Gigele separates from the band again, and Walter Stuefer is brought on board as lead singer instead. The band around the actual founding member Klaus Schubert is working on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of No Bros on a new album, which is to be presented in September 2019. At the same time, Freddy Gigele is also forming a band called No Bros featuring Freddy Gigele , and will give a debut concert in November 2019.
