Polly Moran , actually Pauline Theresa Moran , (born June 28, 1883 in Chicago , Illinois , † January 25, 1952 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American film actress .

Life

The actress began her career as a comedian in vaudeville and has made countless short films ( One Reeler ) for Mack Sennett since 1913 . Her breakthrough as a popular star of the late silent film and early sound film era came in 1927 when MGM brought her to the screen as a team for the first time with actress Marie Dressler . Most of the time, the two comedians were seen as landlords, who actually don't like each other, but whose children fall in love with each other. Their appearances together as a comedian duo were so popular that Louis B. Mayer personally ordered Prosperity , which they shot in 1932 and which dealt with the stock market crash of 1929 in a humorous way, to be completely re-shot after a test demonstration generated devastating reviews.

While Marie Dressler quickly rose to the top of the most popular film stars as a solo star and received the Oscar for best actress at the Academy Awards in 1931 , Polly Moran's career remained mediocre and she never got beyond supporting roles. At the beginning of the 1940s she withdrew into private life in the face of missing roles. However, the attempt to make a comeback towards the end of the decade failed.
