The Union pour la République ( UPR ) is a party from the West African state of Burkina Faso .

Election results

In the 2007 parliamentary elections, the UPR achieved five out of a total of 111 seats, making it the third largest party in Burkina Faso, behind the CDP and the ADF-RDA .

She already achieved this position in the local elections in 2006, where she won 610 out of a total of 17,786 seats (3.5%) in the local councils.

history

The UPR was founded on July 20, 2004 by a group of parliamentarians, members of smaller parties with only one seat in parliament, and some dissidents from other parties. The statutes were adopted at a founding congress on June 4, 2005. But on November 2nd, 2004, the founding members of the UPR were received by Prime Minister Yonli , which means that the party was de facto recognized at that time.

The UPR is a special case in the politics of Burkina Faso, because its party members were already in parliament before the party even existed. Its founding also triggered a new trend in Burkina Faso's politics: with its founding, the fragmentation of the party landscape that had been advancing up to this point stopped.

ideology

The UPR defines itself as centrist-liberal, without, however, committing itself to overly specific positions. In the presidential elections in 2005, the UPR supported the then incumbent and re-elected President Blaise Compaoré . As an argument in favor of Compaoré's candidacy in the presidential elections in 2005, his political and economic record was cited, with which the UPR placed criteria such as effectiveness and efficiency above ideological maxims .
