The Congrès pour la démocratie et le progrès (CDP) is a party from Burkina Faso . From 1987 to 2014 he was the dominant party in the West African country. Originally oriented towards Marxism , the CDP later described itself as social democratic .

history

The CDP was founded in October 1987 after the coup against Sankara under the name Organization pour la démocratie populaire-Mouvement du travail , ODP / MT, by the new President Blaise Compaoré . In the same year it merged with twelve smaller parties to form Parti pour la démocratie et le progrès . The CDP was given its current name at the party congress on February 5, 1996. Officially, this congress was a founding congress of a new party that emerged from the merger of 13 different parties. In fact, the old ODP / MT dominated in such a blatant way that one cannot speak of a merger, but rather of the accession of various small parties to form a large party.

The CDP dominated Burkinabe politics until 2014; he had an absolute majority in parliament and provided the president ( Blaise Compaoré ) and the prime minister ( Luc-Adolphe Tiao ).

Current situation and strength of the party

In the 2007–2012 legislative period, the CDP had 72 out of 111 seats (almost 65%). In the combined parliamentary and municipal elections on December 2, 2012 , the CDP was able to maintain its strong position, although it lost proportionally seats. He still had 70 of the 127 MPs in the National Assembly of Burkina Faso, which corresponds to a seat share of around 55%. The CDP was also successful in the 2012 municipal elections: 12,340 out of a total of 18,645 municipal councilors belonged to the CDP, which is around 66%.

The CDP is also present in the municipalities: the seat of the local party of La-Todin

In 2014, part of the party split off and founded the Mouvement du peuple pour le progrès (MPP) . In addition to other important party exponents, Roch Marc Kaboré , the party chairman at the time and today's president, left the CDP. In the parliamentary elections on November 29, 2015, the first election after the overthrow of Compaoré in October 2014 , the party only received 13.2% of the votes and has only had 18 of the 127 members of parliament since then.
