Andrei Jurjewitsch Sjusin ( Russian Андрей Юрьевич Зюзин ; born January 21, 1978 in Ufa , Russian SFSR ) is a former Russian ice hockey player who has been an assistant coach at Salawat Julajew Ufa since May 2015 . Before that, he was active for many years with the San Jose Sharks , Tampa Bay Lightning , Minnesota Wild in the National Hockey League and for various Russian ice hockey clubs.

Career

Sjusin first played from 1994 to 1997 in the Russian Super League at his home club Salawat Julajew Ufa . The Russian was considered at the time as one of the best young players outside of North America and so chose him San Jose Sharks in the NHL Entry Draft in 1996 out in the first round in second position.

In the summer of 1997, Sjusin signed his first professional contract in North America. First, it put the Sharks in their AHL - farm team , the Kentucky Thoroughblades , one. During the season , however, they appointed him to the NHL squad. The 1998/99 season began Sjusin initially in the NHL at San Jose. However, after he left the team without permission, management suspended him and transferred him back to the AHL as a punishment. In the summer of 1999 he was sent to the Tampa Bay Lightning along with Bill Houlder , Steve Guolla and Shawn Burr . In return, Niklas Sundström and a third-round pick in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft moved to San Jose.

The 1999/00 season started solidly for Sjusin, but in mid-January 2000 he injured his shoulder and was out the rest of the season. At the beginning of the 2001/02 season , the Lightning transferred him to the New Jersey Devils . Sascha Goc , Josef Boumedienne and Anton But came to Tampa in exchange.

Even in New Jersey, the Russian could not establish himself in the squad. After the transfer, he was only on the ice for 38 games this season. At the beginning of the 2002/03 season , the Devils put the Russian on the waiver list. There the Minnesota Wild secured their services and Sjusin reached the Western Conference final with the team . After being in the 2003/04 season had also played in Minnesota, he went into the lockout - 2004/05 back to Russia, where he both his former club in Ufa as well as Severstal Cherepovets denied games.

In the 2005/06 season , Sjusin returned to the game. After the expiry of his contract, he waived an extension of the same and signed for the 2006/07 season with the Calgary Flames , who gave him to the Chicago Blackhawks after only one season in a transfer deal . Since Sjusin was not often used there, he ended his engagement in North America after almost 500 NHL appearances and returned to Russia for the SKA Saint Petersburg in the newly founded Continental Hockey League .

In November 2010 he was dismissed from the SKA and signed by Atlant Mytishchi a week later . At the end of the season, his contract was not extended there either. At the beginning of November 2011 he received a contract with EHC Biel from the National League A limited until December 23, 2011 . In January 2012, the Austrian club EC KAC signed him from the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga .
