Stephen Guolla (born March 15, 1973 in Scarborough , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player on the position of the center . In the National Hockey League he was active for the San Jose Sharks , Tampa Bay Lightning , Atlanta Thrashers and New Jersey Devils .
Career
Guolla first played four years from 1991 to 1995 for Michigan State University in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . After an excellent 1993/94 season, he was selected in the 1994 NHL Supplemental Draft in third overall position by the Ottawa Senators . The Canadian spent another year at the university before joining the Prince Edward Island Senators , Ottawa's farm team at the time , in the American Hockey League for the 1995/96 season.
After his contract had expired, he signed as a free agent a contract with the San Jose Sharks , where he was used in the 1996/97 season in approximately equal parts in both the National Hockey League and in the AHL with the Kentucky Thoroughblades . In the following two seasons followed only sporadic missions with the San Jose Sharks, which he played more often for the Thoroughblades. In the 1997/98 season, the center received the AHL Les Cunningham Award for Most Valuable Regular Season Player for 100 points in 69 games . Since the Canadian was no longer used by the Sharks, he was handed over to the Tampa Bay Lightning in August 1999 together with Shawn Burr , Bill Houlder and Andrei Sjusin , who in return transferred Niklas Sundström to San Jose.
In Tampa, Guolla made the jump back to the NHL, but was put on the waiver list during the 1999/00 season because the team had looked for other players. From there he was selected by the newly founded Atlanta Thrashers and Guolla was able to establish himself in the team's NHL regulars until his contract ran out in summer 2001. Then the free agent moved to the New Jersey Devils , who used him only twelve times in the NHL in the following three seasons, but this was also due to the fact that Guolla missed large parts of the seasons 2002/03 and 2003/04 due to a persistent back injury .
Also due to the lockout in the 2004/05 season , Guolla moved to Europe and played the season briefly in the Swiss National League A with the Kloten Flyers . For the 2005/06 game year he signed a contract with the Hannover Scorpions in the German Ice Hockey League , which he left after a year and moved to the Finnish SM-liiga at HIFK Helsinki . For the game year 2008/09 he signed a contract with HC Innsbruck in the Austrian Erste Bank Eishockey Liga .
From November 2009 to December 2010 he was under contract with Tappara Tampere . He then ended his active career.
