Sundström celebrated numerous successes with the Swedish national team , especially at international level , including winning the 1998 World Cup .
Career
Sundström first played at MODO Hockey in his Swedish hometown Örnsköldsvik until 1995, when he was 16 years old for the first time in the Elitserien , the highest Swedish league. In the MoDo junior team, he had formed an attack line with Peter Forsberg and Markus Näslund . After the Swede was selected in the first round in the NHL Entry Draft by the New York Rangers in eighth overall position , he left his home club at the end of the 1994/95 season and dared to move to the North American continent.
Right at the beginning of the 1995/96 season he made the leap into the National Hockey League and played all 82 season games for the New York Rangers, who had gone into this season as defending champions of the Stanley Cup . In the second year he played his best NHL season with 52 points in 82 games, but still shone with his fair, defensive game, which was reflected in the statistics with only 20 penalty minutes and a plus / minus statistic of +23. Sundström finally stayed until the end of the 1998/99 season in the " Big Apple " before he was given in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft together with Dan Cloutier and two draft voting rights to the Tampa Bay Lightning , which in return had a high voting right in the Draft received the following year with which Pavel Brendl was later selected. Only a few weeks later, the Lightning also transferred him. For Shawn Burr , Steve Guolla , Bill Houlder and Andrei Sjusin who pledged San Jose Sharks the winger. Sundström played three strong years in San Jose, as he continued to be an indispensable factor due to his offensive and defensive skills. In all three seasons they also qualified for the playoffs, which had not been possible for the New York Rangers in the last two years. After the Sharks could no longer reach the level of play of previous years in the 2002/03 season and Sundström's performance had dropped significantly compared to the previous seasons, the management decided shortly before the end of the transfer period to rebuild, which also the Swede fell victim. In January 2003 he was given in a transfer deal between the San Jose Sharks, Boston Bruins and Montréal Canadiens to Montreal. In Montreal, where Sundström until the end of the 2005/06 season , with the exception of the Lockout - 2004/05 season , he in Italy at the Milano Vipers spent, played, however, he could not match the performance of his time in Join New York and at the beginning of his engagement with San Jose. After exactly 750 games and 349 points in ten NHL years, he returned to Sweden to his home club in the summer of 2006.
At MODO Hockey, at the end of the 2006/07 game year, his offensive statistics improved significantly. Until 2013, he was assistant captain of his team for four years, before he declared MODO to end his active career at the age of 38 after the 2012/13 season. Sundström then returned to North America, where he was hired as a scout for the European market by his ex-team San Jose Sharks. He also works on the coaching staff of the San Jose Barracuda farm team .

Sundström took part in numerous international tournaments with the Swedish national team. He was a member of the team at the Junior World Championships in 1993 , 1994 and 1995 and also played at two Junior European Championships. At senior level, he took part in the 1996 World Cup of Hockey , the 1998 and 2002 Winter Olympics , and the 1998 and 1999 World Championships .
