The 1996 World Cup of Hockey was the first to host the competition of the same name . The successor to the Canada Cup was held from August 26 to September 14, 1996 by the North American professional league National Hockey League and the players union National Hockey League Players' Association in cooperation with the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF .

The eight best teams from the IIHF internal world rankings took part in the first edition of the competition. The title was secured by the United States , which prevailed in the final series with 2-1 wins against Canada .

Attendees

The six best teams in the IIHF internal world rankings as well as Slovakia for sporting reasons and Germany for economic reasons were divided into the North American Pool and the European Pool .

The eight teams were divided into two groups of four teams each. After the group matches in the preliminary round, the two group winners qualify directly for the semi-finals. The runners-up and thirds each played a qualifying game for the semi-finals, the fourth was eliminated.

There were no second legs in the final round. The winner, who was determined according to the rules of the National Hockey League , went straight to the next round. The final was played in the "best-of-three" mode.

The final was played in the " best-of-three " mode.

After the Canadians won the opening game at the CoreStates Center in Philadelphia 4-3 in overtime with a goal from Steve Yzerman , the series was continued at the Center Molson in Montréal . There the Americans equalized the series with a 5-2 victory and also won the decisive third game with this result to secure the first World Cup of Hockey. In the third game, the United States were 2-1 down seven minutes before the end of the final period, but turned the game around with four successive hits.

Awards

The American goalkeeper Mike Richter was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament . Richter, who shared the post with Guy Hebert and played six of the seven games, played a key role in the USA's victories in the finals. He was also appointed to the All-Star Team.
