Patrick Martin "Pat" Verbeek (born May 24, 1964 in Sarnia , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and scout as well as current official who played 1541 games for the New Jersey Devils , among other things, in the course of his active career between 1981 and 2002 . Hartford Whalers , New York Rangers , Dallas Stars and Detroit Red Wings played in the National Hockey League as the right winger . Verbeek celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the Detroit Red Wings by winning the Stanley Cup in 1997 and the gold medal at the 1994 World Cup with the Canadian national team . Since 2010 he has worked as an official with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the NHL.
Career
With the Sudbury Wolves in the Ontario Hockey League Verbeek already showed what should also distinguish him in the course of his career. He kept the statistics not only for the scorer points, but also for the penalty times. For these characteristics it brought the New Jersey Devils in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft in the third round as 43. He stayed another year in Sudbury and came at the end of the season to a couple of inserts in the NHL.
From the 1983/84 season Verbeek had fought for his regular place in the NHL and with 20 goals he had a good rookie season . In his fifth full season 1987/88 he was able to improve his statistics again significantly and, with both his 77 scorer points and 227 penalty minutes, he played a key role in ensuring that the Devils finally made it into the playoffs. There they made it to the conference finals, where the Boston Bruins were the last stop after seven games.
In 1989 he was given to the Hartford Whalers . There, too, he was always among the top scorers, but usually had more than 200 penalty minutes. In 1991 he was elected to the All-Star Team, since 1992 he was captain of the Whalers. In 1995 he moved on to the New York Rangers . During this time he got the nickname "Big Ball of Hate" from Glenn Healy after an argument with Ray Ferraro . In 1996 the journey continued to the Dallas Stars . There he was in 1999 his first Stanley Cup win. Two more years followed with the Detroit Red Wings before returning to Dallas for the 2001/02 season. After the end of the season, Pat Verbeek ended his career. No other player in the NHL who had just under 3,000 penalty minutes managed to score over 500 goals.
After the end of his career, he worked partially for the television station FSN Detroit as an analyst for games of the Detroit Red Wings. In 2006 he gave up this post and became one of the Red Wings Pro Scouts . His tasks mainly concern the screening of players from other teams who can be signed by transfer or as a free agent .
