Michael R. "Mike" Rogers (born October 24, 1954 in Calgary , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who worked as a center (center forward) u. a. from 1974 to 1986 for the Edmonton Oilers and the then New England Whalers in the World Hockey Association (WHA) and for the Hartford Whalers , the New York Rangers and the Edmonton Oilers in the National Hockey League (NHL).

Career

Mike Rogers played with the Calgary Centennials in the Western Hockey League (WCHL) during his junior years. Danny Gare , with whom he formed one of the strongest duos in the league, usually played at his side . In the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft , he had to wait until the fifth round because of his small stature before the Vancouver Canucks selected him as 77th. At that time, particularly robust players were in demand among the teams.

In the WHA , however, there was more of a chance for him to assert himself straight away and so he preferred an offer from the Edmonton Oilers , who had secured the rights to him in the 1974 WHA Secret Amateur Draft . Here he played a strong rookie season in the 1974/75 season and scored 83 points. In the course of the following season he moved to the New England Whalers in the WHA and found a new home there. In a row with Gordie and Mark Howe , he was one of the top performers here.

With the dissolution of the WHA it was expected that the Vancouver Canucks would now assert their rights to Rogers, but it was waived. Canucks then general manager Harry Neale described this as one of his biggest mistakes. So Rogers stayed for the 1979/80 season with his team, which was now called Hartford Whalers . But here too, to his surprise, he was only offered a contract, which also provided for the possibility of having him play in the “ farm team ”. Again he prevailed and formed the Stash-Dash-Bash Line with Blaine Stoughton and Pat Boutette . With 105 points he was after Wayne Gretzky the best scorer coming from the WHA in the NHL. Also in the next season he achieved 105 points, a value that no other player in the Whalers jersey has ever achieved again.

For the 1981/82 season , the Whalers wanted to strengthen their defense and gave this to Rogers from the New York Rangers . Here, too, he got more than 100 scorer points in his first year. After four decent years in New York, he was no longer in great demand with the Rangers. In 1985 he was first deported to the American Hockey League farm team for the New Haven Nighthawks . In the same year he returned to the Edmonton Oilers team, where he had started his professional career, then still in the WHA. Here, too, he came only to a few missions and soon found himself again in the AHL with the Nova Scotia Oilers .

In 1986 he moved to Switzerland for a year and played for HC Ambrì-Piotta before ending his professional career in 1987.
