Daniel Mirl Gare (born May 14, 1954 in Nelson , British Columbia ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player who was the team captain of the Buffalo Sabers and the Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League .

Career

Danny Gare began his career in 1971 in the Canadian Junior League WCHL with the Calgary Centennials . While he did not bring any noticeable performance in his first season, he developed into a good scorer in his second year and scored 88 points in 65 games. It was not until the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft that he was selected by the Buffalo Sabers in the second round at position 29 after he had scored 127 points in Calgary in the 1973/74 season.

In his first year in Buffalo he was able to convince and collected 62 points. The team advanced to the final of the Stanley Cup , where they lost. Gare was in a storm line with Don Luce and Craig Ramsay . While he was injured for a long time in the 1976/77 season , he was appointed team captain of the Sabers in the fall of 1977 . Danny Gare continued his good performances as a scoring and defensive striker and was in the 1979/80 season with 56 goals together with Charlie Simmer and Blaine Stoughton top scorer of the NHL . At the same time he achieved the best result of his career with 89 points.

After another strong season with 85 points, he was transferred to the Detroit Red Wings in 1981/82 . Before the 1982/83 season , he took over the post as team captain of the Red Wings, which were among the worst teams in the league at the time. His point yield decreased significantly in the following years and he was able to get only 26 points in 63 games in the 1983/84 season . But the team made a step forward this season and qualified again for the playoffs after a long time , to which the 18-year-old Steve Yzerman , who was only signed in autumn 1983, played a major role.

Gare played for Detroit for two more years before his contract expired in the summer of 1986. He left the team and Yzerman took over the "C" of the team captain. Gare then signed a contract with the Edmonton Oilers , which were peppered with superstars such as Wayne Gretzky , Mark Messier and Paul Coffey . The team was able to win the Stanley Cup in the 1986/87 season , but since Gare was not used in the playoffs and had only played 18 season games, his name was not engraved on the trophy.

In the summer of 1987 he left North America and moved to the ECD Iserlohn in Germany. But he didn't do more than one test match there. After the house was searched due to financial inconsistencies in the club in previous years, which also affected Gare, he left Germany again and ended his career.

Shortly thereafter he got a job as a commentator and expert on televising the game of the Buffalo Sabers. He stayed there until 1992, when he became a television commentator for the Tampa Bay Lightning , which were about to begin their first NHL season. In the summer of 1993, he took the post of assistant coach for Tampa Bay and remained in that position for two years. In 1995 he returned to Buffalo, where he commented on the Sabers games on the radio for a year before returning to television for the Buffalo Sabers in 1996, which continued until 2004.

In 2005, the Buffalo Sabers honored Danny Gare by hanging a banner with his number 18 on the ceiling of the HSBC Arena in a festive ceremony . The number will no longer be given to any Sabers player. Gare is the fifth player in the history of the team to receive this honor.

Since 2006 he has been analyzing the games of the Columbus Blue Jackets on television .
