Herbert Albert "Herbie" Lewis (born April 17, 1906 in Calgary , Alberta , † January 20, 1991 in Indianapolis , Indiana , USA ) was a Canadian ice hockey player , coach and functionary, who in the course of his active career between 1924 and 1941 has played 521 games for the Detroit Red Wings and their predecessor teams, the Detroit Cougars and Detroit Falcons, in the National Hockey League on the position of the left winger . His biggest career success in the jersey of the Red Wings celebrated Lewis, the sixth captain of the franchise was Detroit's credit history, in the years 1936 and 1937 by winning the Stanley Cup . Exactly 50 years after his last of eleven seasons in the NHL, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1989 .
Career
Lewis spent his junior career in his native Calgary until 1924 . There he was active in the Calgary City Junior Hockey League - first until 1922 for the Calgary Hustlers , then two years until the summer of 1924 for the Calgary Canadians . With both teams, the striker took part in the Memorial Cup three times in a row between 1922 and 1924 , in which he even reached the final with the Canadians in 1924 . To reach the finals against the Owen Sound Grays from the Ontario Hockey Association , he contributed 20 scorer points in seven games .
For the 1924/25 season, the Canadian moved to the United States , where he joined the Duluth Hornets , who were playing in the United States Amateur Hockey Association at the time. In the course of the following four years he moved with the team first in 1925 to the Central Hockey League , a year later to the newly founded American Hockey Association , whose predecessor was the CHL. Lewis was one of the formative players on the team with his speed. In 1926 he was elected to the First All-Star Team of the CHL before he was able to win the first played championship of the AHA with the team the following year. With his 25 scorer points, the Canadian made a significant contribution to the success of the Hornets, who defeated the Minneapolis Millers 3-0 after games in the final series . In the following year Duluth only narrowly missed the successful title defense in the new edition of the previous year's final. Lewis was nicknamed "The Duke of Duluth" while in Duluth .
In May 1928 Lewis was signed by the Detroit Cougars of the National Hockey League through the Inter-League Draft . He had turned down an alleged offer from league rival New York Rangers for US $ 20,000 and thus opted for Detroit. With the beginning of the 1928/29 season , Lewis advanced to a leading role in the squad of the NHL franchise, which later became known as Falcons and Red Wings . He and Larry Aurie formed a dangerous wing tong , which was initially led by center forward Ebbie Goodfellow . Cooney later replaced Goodfellow in this position. Lewis was responsible in those years always for 30 points scorer and acted in the season 1933-34 as the sixth captain of the franchise credit history of Detroit. In the same season he took part in the Ace Bailey Benefit Game . The team success in Detroit did not turn out until the engagement of Marty Barry in July 1935 for the center position. Together, the assault line led by the three players Lewis, Aurie and Barry led the Red Wings to Stanley Cup wins in 1936 and 1937 . It was the team's first two title wins.
After Lewis' offensive production had drastically decreased in the 1938/39 game year , his contract was not renewed after eleven years in the "Motor City" , and he then moved to the International-American Hockey League . There he initially worked for two years as a player- coach for the Indianapolis Capitals . After finishing his active career - he had only played 32 games for Indianapolis in the two years - at the age of 35 in the summer of 1941 he devoted himself fully to his duties as coach of the Capitals and also took over the post of general manager . In the 1941/42 season he led the team to win the Calder Cup for the first time . After the 1942/43 season he resigned from his offices.
After retiring from ice hockey, Lewis moved the center of his life to Pompano Beach , Florida , where he worked in the oil business. He later moved back to Indianapolis for health reasons , where he died in January 1991 at the age of 84. In 1989 he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame exactly 50 years after his last season in the NHL .
