Memorial Cup 1924

The Memorial Cup in 1924 was the sixth edition of the tournament of the same name . Participating teams were the champions of their respective leagues, the Owen Sound Grays ( Ontario Hockey Association ) and the Calgary Canadians ( Calgary City Junior Hockey League ). The tournament mode provided for two games in which the winner was determined solely on the basis of the goals scored.

The Owen Sound Grays won their first Memorial Cup after two games with 7-5 goals. The tournament was held at Shea's Amphitheater in Winnipeg .

Results

Owen Sound won the first game in the series thanks to two goals each from future National Hockey League players Cooney Weiland and Butch Keeling 5-3.

In the second game, Owen Sound was 1-0 ahead after the first half of the game with a goal from Cooney Weiland before the Calgary Canadians took the lead in the second period thanks to two goals from Irving Frew . In the final section, George Elliott scored for the Grays and thus secured the title for his team.

Memorial Cup Winner

The Owen Sound Grays team consisted of James "Dutch" Cain , George Elliott , Bev Flarity , Teddy Graham , Mel "Butch" Keeling , H. Silverthorne, Headley Smith , Ralph "Cooney" Weiland and E. "Shorty" Wright . The manager of the team was Jim Jamieson , the team was coached by ET Hicks.
