Memorial Cup 1928

The Memorial Cup 1928 was the tenth edition of the tournament of the same name . Participating teams were the champions of their respective leagues, the Ottawa Gunners ( Ottawa City Junior Hockey League ) and the Regina Monarchs ( South Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League ). The mode saw a best-of-three series.

The Regina Monarchs won their first Memorial Cup after three games. The tournament was held in Toronto .

Results

In the first game of the series, Harold "Mush" March scored all four goals for the Regina Monarchs . For the Ottawa Gunners , Armstrong met in the second half of the game and Syd Howe twice in the final third . The game was played very physically, with a total of 22 penalties.

The Gunners decide the second game after goals from Quinn and Tommy McInenly 2-1 for themselves. The only goal for the Monarchs was again scored by Mush March in the second period. The game was played in Toronto's Varsity Arena , which has a smaller ice rink than Arena Gardens and was sold out with 4,500 spectators.

The third and final game was decided by the Monarchs with 7-1 goals. Harold March scored the only goal of the first period. He later scored another hit; overall March scored seven of the twelve goals of the Regina Monarchs. The Monarchs' other goals were scored by Harold Shaw , Ken "Swede" Williamson , Charles "Chuck" Farrow and Len Dowie , who like Mush March was twice successful. The consolation goal for the Ottawa Gunners defender scored Armstrong in the middle third.

Memorial Cup Winner

The Regina Monarchs team consisted of John Achtzner , Carl Bergl , Len Dowie , Charles "Chuck" Farrow , Jim Langford , Harold "Mush" March , G. Parron , Harold Shaw and Ken "Swede" Williamson . The coach and manager of the team was Howie Milne .
