Memorial Cup 1927

The Memorial Cup 1927 was the ninth edition of the tournament of the same name . Participating teams were the champions of their respective leagues, the Owen Sound Grays ( Ontario Hockey Association ) and the Port Arthur West Ends ( Thunder Bay Junior Hockey League ). The mode saw a best-of-three series. The tournament was held in Toronto .

The Owen Sound Grays won their second and last Memorial Cup after two games after 1924 . The Grays were the first team to win the cup for the second time. The referee of both games was Lou Marsh , a Canadian athlete, referee and journalist, after whom the Lou Marsh Trophy is named, which has been awarded annually to Canada's best athletes since 1936.

Results

In the first game of the series, Owen Sound took the lead after a goal from Harold "Shrimp" McDougall in the first period. In the second half of the game, Cliff Barton equalized 1-1 early on before Hilli's “Paddy” Paddon put the Grays back in the lead. Jack McKay then scored for Port Arthur to equalize. In the last third of the game, Owen Sounds met Martin Lauder twice. The players Cross and Edward Monohan then scored to equalize again before Lauder made the victory for the Owen Sound Grays perfect with his third goal of the game.

In the second game, Owen Sound's Harold “Shrimp” McDougall scored four times for the Grays, and Hilli's “Paddy” Paddon scored another goal for the team. For the Port Arthur West Ends, Norman Friday , Cliff Barton and Cross met . The overtime was not played in sudden death mode and lasted ten minutes.

Memorial Cup Winner

The Owen Sound Grays team consisted of Johnny "Red" Beattie , Benny Grant , John Grant, Martin Lauder , Jack Markle , Harold "Shrimp" McDougall , Alvin Moore , Hilli's "Paddy" Paddon and H. Smith . The team was coached by Father J. Spratt and Bill Hancock . The manager of the team was A. Bennett .
