Memorial Cup 1926

The Memorial Cup 1926 was the eighth edition of the tournament of the same name . Participating teams were champions of their respective leagues, the Calgary Canadiens ( Calgary City Junior Hockey League ) and the Queen's University team , the Queen's Golden Gaels , from the Ontario Hockey Association . For the first time, the tournament winner was not determined based on the goals scored; the mode provided for a best-of-three series. The tournament was played in Winnipeg .

The Calgary Canadians won their first and only Memorial Cup after their second appearance in the finals after 1924 . Only at the Memorial Cup 1999 should a team from Calgary again be in the final of this competition with the Calgary Hitmen . Queen's University was also the last university to take part in a Memorial Cup finals.

Results

In the first third of the first game in the series, Queen's took a 2-1 lead after goals from Carl Voss and Reid , while Calgary's goal was scored by George McTeer . In the second half of the game, the player McPherson scored twice for the university team, Paul Thompson only scored the connection goal in the final third.

Calgary won the second game thanks to a late goal from defender Gordon Savage . The Canadians took the lead in the first period through goals from Thompson and Donnie McFadyen . In the final third, Hartley scored twice to equalize before Savage decided the game for the Calgary Canadians.

The Canadians were 3-0 ahead after goals from Thompson, Ronnie Martin and again Thompson before the last third. For Queen's University, the players Voss and Hartley met in the final section.

Memorial Cup Winner

The Calgary Canadians team consisted of Charles "Chuck" Dunn , Irving Frew , Ronnie Martin , Joe McGoldrich , Donnie McFadyen , George McTeer , Tony Savage , Bert Taylor , Paul Thompson and Sam Timmins . The team's manager and trainer was Eddie Poulin .
