The Regina Pats are a professional Canadian ice hockey team based in Regina , Saskatchewan , playing in the Junior Western Hockey League .
history
The Regina Pats were founded in Regina in 1917, making them the oldest junior ice hockey franchise in the world still playing in its founding city. Initially, the team, nicknamed "Patricias", played after Princess Patricia of Connaught , a granddaughter of Queen Victoria and daughter of Governor General Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn . The name of the club was also closely linked to the “ Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry ”, and the Pats still carry the coat of arms of this infantry regiment on their shoulders. In 1923 the team name was finally shortened to "Regina Pats".
In 1925 and 1930 the Pats won the Canadian Junior Championship, as well as in 1928 under the name "Regina Monarchs". Gaming was suspended during the Second World War , but it was resumed in 1946. In 1966 the Pats were a founding member of today's Western Hockey League, but in 1968 the franchise returned to the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League , whose championship it won in 1969. As early as 1970 the Pats took part in the WHL game operations again, their place in the SJHL was taken by the newly founded Regina Blues farm team , which was active until 1982. In 1974 the Regina Pats won their fourth junior championship with the Memorial Cup , three years later the team moved from the Regina Exhibition Stadium to the newly built Agridome, now the Brandt Center , with a capacity of 7,000 . The Regina Pats hosted the 2001 Memorial Cup in this arena.
