James "Jamie" Heward (born March 30, 1971 in Regina , Saskatchewan ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach and functionary who played 394 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs , Nashville, between 1987 and 2009 Predators , New York Islanders , Columbus Blue Jackets , Washington Capitals , Los Angeles Kings and Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . In addition, he spent a considerable part of his career in the European top leagues. Heward celebrated his greatest career success in the jersey of the Canadian national team by winning gold medals at the world championships in 2003 and 2004 .
Career
Jamie Heward began his career as a hockey player with the Regina Pats , for whom he played in the Western Hockey League from 1987 to 1991 . During this time he was selected during the NHL Entry Draft 1989 in the first round as a total of 16th player by the Pittsburgh Penguins , for which he never played. Initially, the Canadian was on the ice for a total of three years in the International Hockey League for the Muskegon Lumberjacks and the Cleveland Lumberjacks from 1991 to 1994 . After the 1994/95 season, in which Heward had played for Team Canada , the defender was signed as a free agent by the Toronto Maple Leafs , for which he was active for two years.
On July 31, 1997, Heward was hired as a free agent by the Philadelphia Phantoms from the American Hockey League , with whom he won the Calder Cup at the end of the season. After a season, Heward left the Phantoms again and signed a contract with the Nashville Predators from the NHL, where he also played a season, as then with the New York Islanders . From 2000 to 2002 Heward was a member of the Columbus Blue Jackets squad , while from 2002 to 2005 he played for one season each in the Swiss National League A at HC Servette Genève , the ZSC Lions and the SCL Tigers .
After his time in Switzerland, Heward returned to the NHL in the summer of 2005, where he received a contract with the Washington Capitals , for which he was active in the following two seasons. However , he ended the 2006/07 season with the Los Angeles Kings . Before the following season, the defender moved to Europe for the second time in his career , where he was on the ice for SKA Saint Petersburg in the Russian Super League . After a season of Canadians returned to the NHL, where he signed a contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning signed that it immediately before the end of the exchange period duties to the Toronto Maple Leafs, as the financially troubled club was able to save his remaining salary until June. After the season, Heward ended his active career.
After a break of several years, Heward was hired by the Swift Current Broncos from the Western Hockey League as assistant coach and director of player development in the summer of 2012 . Before the 2018/19 season, he moved within the league as an assistant coach to the Vancouver Giants . In addition, he supervised Canadian U17 junior selections at the World U-17 Hockey Challenges 2016 and 2017 as the main coach.
International
For the Canadian national team , Heward took part in the 1995 , 2003 , 2004 and 2005 World Championships . He won two gold, one silver and one bronze medal. In 2004 and 2005, however, he remained without minutes.
