"Stu" Grimson (born May 20, 1965 in Vancouver , British Columbia ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 771 games for the Calgary Flames , Chicago Blackhawks , Mighty Ducks of, among others, between 1982 and 2002 Anaheim , Detroit Red Wings , Hartford Whalers , Carolina Hurricanes , Los Angeles Kings and Nashville Predators in the National Hockey League on the left winger position . Grimson, who embodied the player type of the Enforcer , celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the Salt Lake Golden Eagles by winning the Turner Cup of the International Hockey League in 1988.
Career
Stu Grimson began his career as a hockey player with the Regina Pats , for which he was active from 1982 to 1985 in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League . During this period he was selected in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft in the tenth round as a total of 186th player by the Detroit Red Wings . Since this did not take him in the following two years, however, he could be selected in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft in the seventh round as a total of 143 players by the Calgary Flames . Initially, however, the attacker played for two years each for the team from the University of Manitoba and Calgary's farm team from the International Hockey League , the Salt Lake Golden Eagles , before he made his debut in the National Hockey League for the Flames in the 1988/89 season , where he received five penalty minutes in his only use this season.
With the Salt Lake Golden Eagles, the left shooter won the Turner Cup in the 1987/88 season . From 1990 to 1993 Grimson played for the Chicago Blackhawks , before he was selected in the 1993 NHL Expansion Draft by the newly formed Mighty Ducks of Anaheim . He played for the Mighty Ducks for two years. After a little over a year with the Detroit Red Wings , the Canadian was signed by the Hartford Whalers at the beginning of the 1996/97 season . When these were relocated after the end of the season, the franchise renamed Carolina Hurricanes retained its contractual rights. At the Hurricanes, he was in all 82 games in the 1997/98 season on the ice and scored seven points, including three goals. He then spent two years with his ex-club from Anaheim, as well as one season each with the Los Angeles Kings and Nashville Predators , where he ended his career in 2002. Grimson has spent more than 2,000 minutes in the penalty box throughout his career, during which he fought a series of rivalries with Enforcers including Darren Langdon , Georges Laraque , Krzysztof Oliwa and Bob Probert . His reputation as a feared fighter earned him the nickname "The Grim Reaper" .
Stu Grimson presided over the NHL's Christian Fellowship in the early 1990s. After retiring, he studied law and currently works for a law firm in Nashville .
