Georges Edy Laraque (born December 7, 1976 in Montréal , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player who played 752 games for the Edmonton Oilers , Phoenix Coyotes , Pittsburgh Penguins and Canadiens de Montréal in the course of his active career between 1993 and 2010 National Hockey League . His cousin Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre was also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

The 1.91 m tall winger of Haitian parents first played for various junior teams in the Canadian junior league Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec before becoming the 31st player in the second round of the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft selected. With his last position in the LHJMQ, the Prédateurs de Granby , the right- shooter won both the Coupe du Président and the Memorial Cup in the 1995/96 season .

In the summer of 1996, the Canadian moved to the Oilers organization , where he was initially employed by the Hamilton Bulldogs , their farm team in the American Hockey League . In the 1997/98 season Laraque made the first jump into the NHL roster of the Edmonton Oilers. While he was mostly used as a power forward during his junior years , he now mainly played as an enforcer . Due to his physical dominance and his mentality, he also drew attention to himself in numerous fights , which brought him the title of “Best Fighter” in 2003, awarded by the ice hockey magazine “ The Hockey News ”. This meant that Laraque's offensive qualities were often misunderstood and he was mostly limited to his role as enforcer.

During the lockout in the 2004/05 NHL season , Laraque played for AIK Solna in the Swedish third division . With the team he managed at the end of the season promotion to the second-rate Allsvenskan before returning to Edmonton. With the Oilers he reached the Stanley Cup final in the following season . There they lost to the Carolina Hurricanes . After the game year, the Edmonton Oilers set up Laraque as a free agent , but the attacker declared that he would definitely stay in Edmonton and, if necessary, forego his salary. However, since Laraque did not agree to a release clause for the club, the contract was never signed. The Canadian then signed a contract with the Phoenix Coyotes , who transferred him to the Pittsburgh Penguins after a season in exchange for Daniel Carcillo and a third-round vote in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft .

With the Penguins, Georges Laraque reached the Stanley Cup final for the second time in his career as part of the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2008 , but again he failed to win the North American Ice Hockey Championship because the Penguins were subject to the Detroit Red Wings . For the 2008/09 season , the Canadian signed a two-year contract in his hometown with the Canadiens de Montréal . They announced in January 2010 that they would no longer have any use for the winger and paid him the remaining amount of his contract, which ran until the summer. In August 2010 Laraque ended his career as an ice hockey player and was only on the ice in two games for the Norwegian third division club Fana IHK after a four-year break .

Laraque has been a member of the Canadian Green Party since 2010 and was vice-president from 2010 to 2013.
