The Winnipeg Warriors were a Canadian ice hockey team based in Winnipeg , Manitoba . The team played from 1980 to 1984 in one of the top three Canadian junior ice hockey leagues, the Western Hockey League (WHL).
history
The Winnipeg Warriors were founded in 1980 as a franchise of the Western Hockey League . In the four years of its existence, the team reached the playoffs for the Ed Chynoweth Cup only once , in which they were defeated in the qualifying round of the Lethbridge Broncos in the best-of-five series with a sweep in 1982/83 . In the 1983/84 season, the Warriors won only nine of the 72 regular season games, making them the worst WHL season ever after the Victoria Cougars (1989/90). Due to the sporting failure and the low audience interest - with the Winnipeg Jets from the National Hockey League there was overwhelming competition in the market - the owners of the Winnipeg Warriors decided to move the franchise to Moose Jaw , Saskatchewan , before the 1984/85 season , where it has since participated in the WHL's gaming operations under the name Moose Jaw Warriors .
