history

The Weyburn Red Wings were founded in 1961 as a team in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League , in which they participated until 1966. They then became one of seven founding members of the Western Hockey League , in which they were able to qualify as sixth and penultimate for the playoffs for the Ed Chynoweth Cup , in which they, however, already in the first round in the best-of-seven series failed with 1: 4 victories at the later finalist Regina Pats . In the following season they finished last in the league expanded to eleven teams, after which they returned to the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, which they could win in 1970, 1971, 1984, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998 and 2001 respectively. Logo, club name and colors are based on those of the Detroit Red Wings from the National Hockey League .
