The Kootenay Ice were a Canadian junior ice hockey team from Cranbrook , British Columbia that played in the Western Hockey League . The franchise played its home games in the Cranbrook Recreational Complex , which the fans also simply called RecPlex .

history

In 1996 the team was founded as Edmonton Ice , in 1998 they finally moved from Edmonton to Cranbrook, where they continued to play in the WHL as Kootenay Ice. In 2002 the Ice won the Memorial Cup , the championship of the umbrella organization CHL , which is played annually between the champions of the top three Canadian junior leagues, WHL, OHL and QMJHL . In 2000 the franchise first entered this competition after winning the WHL championship for the first time in the club's history. In the 2010/11 season, the team won the WHL championship for the third time in its history and the championship cup , which has now been renamed the Ed Chynoweth Cup . In the playoff finals, the team prevailed in five encounters against the Portland Winterhawks .

After the team was sold to a group of investors from Winnipeg in 2017 , the franchise just moved there for the 2019/20 season. It has been running there as Winnipeg Ice ever since .
