Tomáš Plíhal (born March 28, 1983 in Frýdlant v Čechách , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Czech third division club HC Jablonec nad Nisou since July 2020, where he is head coach and manager at the same time. Plíhal previously worked in North America, among other places, where he played 93 games for the San Jose Sharks in the National Hockey League (NHL).
Career
Plíhal first played in the Czech U18 and U20 extra leagues at HC Liberec . After successfully participating in the U18 World Cup in 2001 with the Czech national team and the selection by the San Jose Sharks in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft in the fifth round in 140th position, Plíhal decided to work in North America.
At the beginning of the 2001/02 season he moved to the Kootenay Ice in the Western Hockey League , where he stayed two seasons. In 2002 he won both the President's Cup and the Memorial Cup with the Ice . With consistently good performances and strong offensive statistics, he attracted the attention of the Sharks' scouts. This piloted him in the summer of 2003 to the Cleveland Barons , the Sharks' farm team at the time, in the American Hockey League , where Plíhal played for three seasons. In the 2006/07 season , the Czech first played with the Worcester Sharks , the new farm team San Joses, before they called him on January 25, 2007 for the first time in the NHL squad. He played his first game a day later against the Edmonton Oilers and two more missions followed. At the beginning of the 2007/08 season , the Czech was out for a long time with a shoulder injury and was only able to intervene in the game at the beginning of December. After he had played in Worcester until mid-January 2008, he was again ordered to San Jose. There he stayed for the rest of the season and came to a total of 22 NHL appearances in the regular season and four in the playoffs. In contrast, there were 22 more on the farm team. Overall, he came to four points in the 22 NHL encounters, including one goal. The Czech Republic spent the 2008/09 season entirely in San Jose, making 64 appearances. His 13 scorer points earned him the club's internal rookie of the year award .
Nevertheless, the management did not extend the striker's contract, whereupon he signed a contract with the Finnish club TPS Turku from the SM-liiga in early September 2009 . The Czech belonged to the club for three years, before one year engagements with the league rivals Kärpät Oulu and Tappara Tampere followed. From May 2014 Plíhal was under contract with HC Oceláři Třinec in the Czech Extra League and reached the runner-up with this at the end of the 2014/15 season. In September 2016 he finally moved to Orli Znojmo .
On March 1, 2018, the Heilbronner Falken announced his commitment, where he was under contract until the end of the 2017/18 season.
