The Children's Investment Fund (TCI) is a British hedge fund from London that was founded by former Perry Capital employee Christopher Hohn (mostly referred to as Chris Hohn ) in January 2004. In 2004 and 2005 the fund won the EuroHedge Award for the most successful hedge fund. The fund donates between 0.5 and 1 percent of its assets annually to the charitable Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), which is headed by Hohn's wife Jamie and supports the European Climate Foundation , among other things . This makes Chris Hohn the UK's largest private donor.

history

In 2005, under pressure from TCI, the then CEO of Deutsche Börse AG, Werner Seifert , had to give up his post after TCI had voted against a planned takeover of the London Stock Exchange (LSE). At that time, TCI was advised by CDU member of the Bundestag, Friedrich Merz, among others .

Until April 1, 2009, TCI was the largest single shareholder in Deutsche Börse AG with a share of over 10 percent and still holds a 7.3 percent share in the European multi-country exchange Euronext (January 16, 2007). TCI had over $ 7 billion under management in 2006 .

In February 2007, TCI made headlines again in the financial world with demands for fundamental improvements in earnings, an acquisition stop and the sale of unprofitable business areas of the Dutch bank ABN AMRO .

TCI is currently arguing with the Japanese government and the management of the Japanese electricity company Electric Power Development Co. (also known as J-Power ). The company's management rejects TCI's demands for a higher dividend and changes in corporate strategy. The Japanese government rejected TCI's application in May 2008 to increase the share of voting rights in J-Power from currently just under 10% to around 20%. TCI threatened to sue the Japanese government if it refused the application because of national security concerns. J-Power operates the only nationwide high voltage network and distributes energy between the regional suppliers. If investments were not made here or there was a risk of power outages, Industry Minister Akira Amari justified the decision. TCI appealed against the decision. In western financial circles, it is assumed that TCI will not be successful with its strategy in Japan.

At the end of 2007 TCI tried to gain control of the American railroad company CSX Corporation by means of a majority stake . TCI also has interests in Chinese utility Huadian Power and has positioned itself strongly in the Hong Kong real estate market with significant interests in The Link REIT , Sinolink Worldwide Holdings and New World Development .

Company structure

Parent company of TCI seems The Children's Investment Fund Management Cayman Ltd to be. The English The Children's Investment Fund Management Limited is a subsidiary of this parent company and in turn holds 50 to 75 percent of The Children's Investment Fund Management (UK) LLP , in which Christopher Hohn also holds a direct 25 to 50 percent.

There is also The Children's Investment Master Fund based in George Town .
