The Bílí Tygři Liberec are a Czech ice hockey club from Liberec that has played in the Czech Extra League since the 2002/03 season and plays its home games in the Home Credit Arena .

Club history

After the Second World War, there were three associations in Liberec, two of which merged in 1956 to form "Lokomotiva Liberec". In 1961 the club name was changed to "Stadion Liberec". The club's first team played in the second and third Czechoslovak leagues between 1961 and the early 1990s.

The local construction company Syner has been actively involved as a sponsor and in the management of the association since 1994 . In the 1994/95 season the promotion to the first division (second class) could be celebrated. In the new millennium, the association was given a new image by signing a cooperation agreement with the Liberec Zoo and henceforth called Bílí Tygři after the white tigers . Two years later, in the play-offs against HC Vagnerplast Kladno, promotion to the extra league was achieved. The club was able to establish itself in the top Czech league and has reached the play-offs every year since 2004.

In the 2004/05 play-offs , Liberec won the series against Slavia Prague 4-3 and lost 1-4 in the semi-finals against the future champions from Pardubice . Thanks to the good starting position, third place in the overall ranking was achieved. The club finished the main round of the 2005/06 and 2006/07 seasons in first place on the table.

Since the beginning of the 2005/06 season , coach Josef Paleček's team in the Tipsport Arena has been almost undefeated. After the 2006/07 season , coach Josef Paleček resigned to work as assistant coach for the Czech national team . His successor at the club was the Slovak Dušan Gregor .

In the 2015/16 season , the team under the coach Filip Pešán was first placed in the main round and also Czech champions with a 4-2 in the final of the play-offs against HC Sparta Prague . Also in the following season 2016/17 the main round could be finished in first place in the table, but the final was lost 4-0 against HC Kometa Brno . In the 2018/19 season , the main round was won again, which was the fifth time since promotion to the Extraliga in 2002. In the final, however, the Bílí Tygři Liberec lost 2: 4 against HC Oceláři Třinec . In the following season , four games before the end of the main round, the winner of the main round was again certain. For the first time since the founding of the Extraliga, a team managed to win the President's Cup six times.

Since the 2014/15 season , the club has participated in the Champions Hockey League four times and reached the round of 16 in 2015/16 and 2016/17 . In the 2017/18 season , the team made it to the semi-finals, but lost to the Växjö Lakers .
