Jaroslav Modrý (born February 27, 1971 in České Budějovice , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player and current coach who played 753 games for the Los Angeles Kings , New Jersey Devils , Atlanta Thrashers between 1987 and 2008 , Ottawa Senators and Dallas Stars played in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . He also played for HC Dukla Trenčín , Motor České Budějovice , Bílí Tygři Liberec and HC Plzeň in 1929 from his Czech and Czechoslovak homeland. He celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the Albany River Rats by winning the Calder Cup of the American Hockey League in 1995. Since the summer of 2017, he has been assistant coach of the Ontario Reign of the American Hockey League.

Career

Jaroslav Modrý began his career in the youth teams of TJ Motor České Budějovice and made his debut in 1988 for the men's team in the first division , the top division of Czechoslovakia. In the following two years he established himself within the men's team and was selected during the NHL Entry Draft in 1990 in the ninth round in 179th place by the New Jersey Devils . A short time later, he moved within the ČSSR to TJ Dukla Trenčín .

In 1992 he decided to move to North America and first played with the Utica Devils , the then farm team of the New Jersey Devils, in the American Hockey League . During the 1993/94 season he made his NHL debut for the Devils, but played mostly on the farm teams of the Devils. Parts of the 1994/95 season he spent due to a strike in the NHL in the Czech Republic at HC České Budějovice.

In July 1995 he was handed over by the Devils to the Ottawa Senators , who in March 1996 again transferred to the Los Angeles Kings . In the following years Modrý completed more and more games in the NHL and was otherwise used in the AHL or IHL . The 2000/01 season was Modry's first full NHL season before he reached personal bests for assists and scorer points in the 2001/02 season and took part in the NHL All-Star Game .

In 2004 he left the Los Angeles Kings and signed a contract with the Atlanta Thrashers as a free agent . Since the 2004/05 season was canceled due to a lockout, he returned to the Czech Republic and played for the Bílí Tygři Liberec . In the following season he went on the ice for the Thrashers, before he was handed over to the Dallas Stars in 2006 together with compatriot Patrik Štefan , who in return sent Niko Kapanen and a draft pick to Los Angeles.

Halfway through the 2006/07 season , the stars sent Jaroslav Modrý back to the Kings, who gave Mattias Norström to Dallas for it. During the 2007/08 season it was used again as an exchange object. The Philadelphia Flyers gave the Kings a third-round draft pick and received the Czech defender.

After he did not receive a new NHL contract in the summer of 2008, he moved back to the Czech Republic and signed a two-year contract in Liberec. Due to sporting failure, Modrý received approval in the spring of 2009 and moved to HC Plzeň . There he played until the end of the 2010/11 season before he ended his playing career and was coach of the ice hockey team of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute . In January 2012 he received another contract with HC Plzeň and was eliminated with the club in the play-off semifinals against Kometa Brno. After the fourth defeat in this semi-final, he finally ended his career.

Following his active career, Modrý moved behind the gang and has been assistant coach of the Ontario Reign of the American Hockey League since 2017 .

International

Jaroslav Modrý was already used in 1989 at the U18 European Championship for the junior selection of Czechoslovakia and won the silver medal. Two years later he took part in the U20 World Cup and won the bronze medal with the U20 team of the ČSFR. Since he played in North America in the following years, he no longer took part in international championships. It was not until 2003 that he was appointed to the squad of the Czech national team, with whom he finished fourth at the 2003 World Cup .
