Even before the left-shooter came to his first NHL mission, the Mighty Ducks swapped the rights to him, Joffrey Lupul and other draft picks with the Edmonton Oilers for star defender Chris Pronger . After good performance in the 2005/06 season with the Anaheim Farm Team Portland Pirates , he was part of the Edmonton Oilers NHL squad at the beginning of the following season .

After just eight games in the AHL, however, he was called back to the Oilers' NHL squad and spent the rest of the 2007/08 season there. On November 8, 2013, the Czech was transferred to the Calgary Flames together with goalkeeper Olivier Roy , center Roman Horák and goalkeeper Laurent Brossoit moved to Edmonton in exchange .

Due to a sustained neck injury, the defender only played 31 and 22 games for the Flames in the 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons, so it was decided in September 2016 to suspend Šmíd for the entire 2016/17 season. to achieve a full recovery.
