Ladislav Šmíd (born February 1, 1986 in Frýdlant v Čechách , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Bílí Tygři Liberec in the Czech Extraliga since May 2017 .
Career
The 1.88 m tall defender began his career with the Bílí Tygři Liberec in the Czech Extraliga before he was selected ( drafted ) in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft as ninth in the first round of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim .
Even before the left-shooter came to his first NHL mission, the Mighty Ducks swapped the rights to him, Joffrey Lupul and other draft picks with the Edmonton Oilers for star defender Chris Pronger . After good performance in the 2005/06 season with the Anaheim Farm Team Portland Pirates , he was part of the Edmonton Oilers NHL squad at the beginning of the following season .
In 2007 , Šmíd was nominated for the "Young Stars Game" taking place in the framework of the NHL All-Star Game , where he played for the Western Conference team . In autumn 2007 he could not prevail in the training camp of the Oilers and was initially used in the AHL farm team Springfield Falcons . After just eight games in the AHL, however, he was called back to the Oilers' NHL squad and spent the rest of the 2007/08 season there. On November 8, 2013, the Czech was transferred to the Calgary Flames together with goalkeeper Olivier Roy , center Roman Horák and goalkeeper Laurent Brossoit moved to Edmonton in exchange .
Due to a sustained neck injury, the defender only played 31 and 22 games for the Flames in the 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons, so it was decided in September 2016 to suspend Šmíd for the entire 2016/17 season. to achieve a full recovery.
In May 2017 it was announced that the Czech was returning to his homeland and had signed a two-year contract with the Bílí Tygři Liberec.
International
Ladislav Šmíd has participated in seven world championships so far . For the Czech U18 team, he completed the U18 World Cup in 2003 and 2004 (winning the bronze medal). In the same year, at the age of 18, he also took part in the U20 World Cup. He also played in the U20 youth team in the Czech Republic at the U20 World Cup in 2005 (winning the bronze medal) and in 2006 . For the men's ice hockey world championship in 2007 he was appointed to the Czech national ice hockey team for the first time , but could not achieve a scorer point in six World Cup games .
