Jiří Fischer (born July 31, 1980 in Hořovice , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player and current official who played 343 games for the Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League in the course of his active career between 1995 and 2006 of the defense attorney has denied. Fischer, who had to end his career prematurely due to health problems, spent a total of six years in Detroit and won the Stanley Cup with them in 2002 . Career

Jiří Fischer began his career in 1995 with HC Kladno in the Czech junior league, where he played for two years. In 1997 he moved to the Canadian junior league Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec to the Olympiques de Hull . He had a solid first season in North America with three goals and 19 assists and reached the second round of the playoffs with the Olympiques .

The Detroit Red Wings selected him after the end of the season in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft in the first round in position 25, but Fischer stayed in the LHJMQ for the time being. In the 1998/99 season he developed into the leading player and best defender of his team. In 65 games he scored 22 times and prepared another 56 goals. In addition, he had a large share in the playoffs with six goals and 17 assists in reaching the final series against the Titan d'Acadie-Bathurst , which however emerged as the winner. At the end of the season, Fischer was honored with the Émile Bouchard Trophy as the best defender in the league and was elected to the First All-Star Team of the LHJMQ and the Second All-Star Team of the Canadian Hockey League .

Fischer then switched to the professionals in the summer of 1999, where he took on a much more defensive role and attracted attention due to his height of 1.96 m due to his physical game. The first two years he played mainly with the Red Wings in the National Hockey League , but was also used by their farm team , the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks , in the AHL . In the 2001/02 season he had finally secured a permanent place in the Detroit NHL squad and won the Stanley Cup with the team . In the following season, however, he came only to 15 missions because he had to pause almost the entire season due to a serious knee injury. For the 2003/04 season, but he returned again and reached with four goals and 15 assists, the best personal result of his career.

Since the NHL season 2004/05 was canceled because of the lockout , he went back to his homeland and played in the Czech extra league for Bílí Tygři Liberec . In spring 2005 he also took part in the World Cup with the Czech national team for the first time and won the gold medal.

For the 2005/06 season Fischer returned to the Detroit Red Wings and was able to score eight times in the first 21 games of the season. On November 21, 2005 in the home game of the Red Wings against the Nashville Predators , Jiří Fischer collapsed at the end of the first period with a cardiac arrest on the bench. He had to be resuscitated by team doctor Tony Colucci by defibrillator , whereupon he was admitted to the Detroit Receiving Hospital , where his condition stabilized and he was discharged after two days. Only a few days later, on November 28, Fischer was hospitalized again after an abnormal heart rhythm developed.

As a result, Fischer had to undergo further examinations, but continued to train with a view to a possible return to the ice, but due to his health problems he was ultimately no longer able to take up ice hockey. During that time he remained a member of the Detroit Red Wings organization and was appointed Director of Player Development in the summer of 2007. In this position he mainly oversees the development of the young players. After winning the Stanley Cup with Detroit as a player in 2002, Fischer received his second Stanley Cup ring as an official of the franchise after winning the Stanley Cup in 2008 .
